5.3 cranking issues. Was running, needed tune.

Group, Thank you for your input for a struggling newb. I had my truck running with a 5.3 from an 05 silverado. I have the following things that I have done and short story, it was running... I swapped the oil pan for a shorter pan by lifting the motor a few inches with my hoist. I set it back down and filled with fresh oil and it will turn over but will not crank.

5.3 L, 2005 truck injectors, stock tune, 54-454-11 cam, TBSS intake and throttle body with Xlink. Good ground to head and battery. Stock ECU, stock throttle and TAC module. New plugs, new cam, and crank sensor after crank issues started.

I have confirmed grounds are good. There are no codes, I confirmed spark and fuel, spark on every cylinder, fuel rails were pulled and injectors all sprayed fuel on cranking.

I enabled as many readouts as I could to try to diagnose my cranking issues. I am uploading the file here:

Like i said, it was running, now it will not even fire up. It sounds like it is trying but even with starter fluid I am not getting any firing cylinders.

Charge the battery. 10v while cranking at 150rpm

Is the anti theft disabled ?

Yeah I'd put a charger on it but it's not too low to not start. It's right on the edge though. First thing is try starting it on spray. If it won't start on spray you most likely don't have spark. Might want to check the grounds on the back of the heads make sure you didn't pull them loose when you lifted the engine.

Stock tune with all those parts changed? If that's accurate and not a typo I'm more surprised that it ever ran before, not so surprised that it won't run now that it's winter.

Check out the injector PW while cranking... I think I'd disable the fuel pump and/or injectors, clear it out, then see if it runs when sprayed.

Replying to all, the grounds are good, I redid those right after. Low voltage, I will address, vats are deleted.

It will not start with starter fluid. I will capture the injector pulse width on cranking.

I have tunes for the new intake and cam but it was not cranking on that either. It ran on stock tune but it was not great.

You already captured the injector PWs while cranking, in your log it was over 120ms which seems like a lot. Adding more fuel with starting fluid won't tell you anything, if the no-start is from too much fuel from the injectors.

Yep need to check the plugs and make sure they aren't soaked.

Thank you both. I tried cranking it today and it fired up twice but then it will not crank again. I am going to be doing some work finding a few leaks and re-sealing those so I will have to come back to this again sooon. I have new injectors and a tune file for those. I am concerned that the TB position is possibly an issue, it flutters a lot when the key is turned on and it flutters when you use the accelerator as well. The accelerator pedal position at WOT shows 154%. Is that normal or is there a place to adjust it in the tune file? I wonder if the X-Link issues with the 90mm throttle and the tune are causing problems. Your engine/PCM donor truck had adjustable pedals, and this is now in a swap vehicle, and it's now using a non-adjustable pedal?

Have you tried disabling the fuel system, clearing it out, and THEN feeding it with carb/brake cleaner?

No I am trying to use the stock pedal and TAC from 2004 with Xlink to TBSS 90mm Throttle. I am confused a bit by the accelerator position I saw today. I am considering ripping the DBW out and Going DBC I have had a lot of issues with this DBW so far.

I will try disabling the fuel and seeing if it will run on starter fluid or brake cleaner.

You have a 2005 PCM/OS in a 2004 truck with non-adjustable pedals - that means this is a swap vehicle (it does not have all the stock parts the tune's VIN would indicate - right?). I'm guessing the 2005 donor (or the tune file you're using) had adjustable pedals. That difference is not something there is a way to account for in the tune. It IS somewhere in the tune, just not defined in the Editor. TAC modules are identical (and not programmable) for both adjustable pedal & non-adjustable trucks. I checked the file, it's listed as a 2005 and has a 2005 VIN. Your truck is a 2004. The year of the physical oily bits in the engine don't matter, those are all the same.

Got it, so the 2004 Avalanche blew a motor and I guess the guy that had it did a swap. I took the Avalanche after it was wrecked and pulled everything and have it in a 1965 c10. TAC and Pedal from the Avalanche I guess. So I should track down a 2005 pedal?

The adjustable and non- sweep different ranges, you can't mix and match, and you (probably?) can't fit the godawful adjustable pedal setup into a '65 C10.

Got it, think I should multiply the table by .65 to adjust the value down?

I think if you do a search using some combo of likely terms like '150', 'throttle', 'dbw', 'pedal' you will find a whole bunch of other people who did the same thing and there is no known fix, other than changing to an OS from a confirmed VIN that was built with non-adjustable pedals.

I was unfortunate too buy a motor that came with the correct pedal and TAC but had those horrendous adjustable set up, i manged too trim it down and it works fine

I do not have the pedal, it seems this ECU that was in the Avalanche I bought was from a different vehicle and that vehicle had the adjustable pedal. So my pedal is showing 155% at WOT, the throttle is having trouble settling in with Xlink and TBSS 90mm from an 07 TBSS. I just noticed the 155% while investigating the TB flutter. I am about ready to just toss the DBW all together and go DBC. If I can salvage it I will but it seems like too much work right now. Only other option is to buy a ECU from a standard truck.
