Early 04 Tune help

I have an early 04 that I have been datalogging and building my tune for. I have been logging my smarty and using the timing calc on here. This is what I have came up with but want someone to check over it before I load it. I know it will need fine tuning to the boost table to reduce the low rpm smoke that the smarty so easily produces. Biggest concerns are the max PW, timing all through and rail pressure in the mid range. The stock file had a huge dip in timing in the midrange and also a dip on the rail pressure there also. I just want power without parts on the ground! Just finished putting on a FASS 95 pump and GDP 2 micron filter. Still on stock injectors. From all my logs the rail pressure has stayed with the demanded. Crazy to see that this truck had the original lift pump after reading so much about their failures, 176k and it was a champ that now lives in a garbage can...

Well, I decided to spray and pray. Logged it and realized it wasn't following the transient table but the low air density table. Thought that was weird since I'm at sea level basically and the pressure outside is normal. So I tuned up that table and did more work on both. Running just under a 50/50 split most of the table down to where the factory table runs more BTDC. Everything seems good, but I don't reckon my clutch is able to hold this amount of torque. Gotta pay to play.

Alright, so it seems that it runs good in all areas. I have not heard any injector rattle or problems in most of the rpm or load ranges except if I am in 2nd or 3rd. I believe I had the same problem on the Smarty SW7 in 2nd gear. If I floor it in 3rd I get a lot of feedback from the engine, a rumble and just all around bad noises. At first it will accelerate nicely then the exhaust noise changes to a much deeper noise. I have tried datalogging it but I normally let off so fast it is hard to tell. If I roll into it smoother it doesn't seem to happen. From what I've seen rail pressure is staying what is demanded. With the smarty it only happens if I nail it in 2nd. With this tune it happens in 3rd (3.73 with 35" tires) First time was when I rolled out then went full throttle around 1500 rpm and it seemed to occur around 2200. It all happened so fast.
So my thoughts: Compressor stall, too much timing, draining rail pressure. On stock timing I don't feel this, but then again it doesn't accelerate like this and demand the fuel it does, and it doesn't have issues in higher gears. I will try to get a better log tomorrow and hope to not put a window in the block...

Does this feel like a misfire? Does the truck accelerate hard then miss and make a popping noise?

Keep in mind im fairly new to this tuning stuff, but it looks to me like you have some room to work with on the pulsewidth table. I would work on your rail pressure table, smooth it out. The problem 30 Rum said is some thing I actually experienced with my last flash, so im kinda working on that. My truck has also been following the low air dens. Steady state table for timing.

30rum, that is about what it does. It accelerates hard then almost falls flat and sometimes a popping noise. It was hard to data log to see if rail pressure was dropping. I actually reflashed it today with a much milder timing map. It isn't doing it, but at the same time it is much less lively. I based it off the Smarty #7 I logged.
As far as the RP table goes, have you just smoothed the areas out a lot? I went back and looked at the one in tune 4 compared to stock and it seemed like I had a lot more than what stock was demanding in the midrange and upper levels up to 160max.

Yes, pretty much made it smooth and pretty for now. I have my rail limit set to somewhere slightly above stock and it seems like the truck follows it really close. Im pretty happy with the tune I have now, with the exception of the popping and falling on its face when I set the low air dens table timing to what I wanted(50/50).

I'm still curious what is causing that. It sure accelerates hard before that happens! I have it really mild right now, still on a stock clutch. I saw the smarty spraying 3100us on setting 7, but have mine maxed out about 2900 now. It runs good and doesn't smoke as much doen low because of the boost limit table. I want to know more about the timing split to maximize mileage and performance. I reckon I could bump up the cruise range timing but leave the high load/mid rpm range not at a 50/50. Unlike the gas engine world its much harder to tune that fine edge. No knock sensors for feedback!

I agree, i have mine set to around 2900us as well. I would say mine runs a hair quicker than when I had my smarty turned all the way up. also have my 62 lighting around 1550. And it never goes over 1200 egts. I would really like to find what the problem is with this popping noise. I don't know if you saw but I started another thread to see if anyone has any opinions. Feel free to compare my tune file to yours.

So it sounds like I was running way too much timing in the 1400-2400 rpm range, as a 50/50 split is just too early with the cylinder pressure spiking fast. I toned it back a lot in that area and the cruise area. I actually broke down and bought a tune. Figured it would be a good learning experience and keep me out of trouble.

I think you did pretty well. Each truck can take slightly more or less timing/fuel at peak torque but you were off to a very good start.
