First fire and idle 5.3 Turbo on E85 3 bar OS, 40% rich???

Hi all,

I just got this running this week. Started right up and settled into a good idle at 950.
I let it idle for 18 minutes or so while logging. Then lost the data thanks to user error (I hate touchpads!)
While it idled, I was reading AFR on the gas scale and it clearly was rich. Around 10:1.

So I reset everything up to read Lambda. And give me Lambda error. I'm using the config in 1/EQ to show commanded lambda.

Today I did a cold start and logged the data. Didn't F it up this time.
It idles at .7 lambda. Runs well though.
Slow revved to near 3000 holding a bit along the way, same result.

It's running in open loop.

I've double checked the injector data. (ID 1000) at 50psi base pressure.

Just a quick follow up.

With the VCM controls I adjusted the AFR to get to Lambda 1 on the wideband.
I seem to have a large offset between commanded and actual.
The idle quality improved markedly.

Perhaps I've hosed the injector data somehow?

just looked at tune and nothing else but all looks like your on the right track. just tune the ve table and see what you get. i am assuming brfpr after the rails? i am also assuming you used the tutorial . if so its designed to leave you quite fat. mix in giant injectors and your really quite safe now. good going on using lambda.

Correct on the FPR. Pressure drops with vacuum. Of course no boost yet.
VE table is stock for this engine. With the boost regions added and blended. Tutorial? I didn't increase the base portion of the table.

post the donor file. i just think your ve is high vs your injector data. try leaving in open loop and taking the ve down your % error . did you clear the trims?

The orig file was a 99 Camaro 5.7. I copied everything I thought was relevant from a 99 5.3.
I'm actually at the drags watching so I'll post it tonight. Trims are all turned off.

you changed displacement?

I did change the displacement.

Your comment about displacement got me to thinking. So I did a search about doing this in HPT and found a comment that if you change the displacement, (cyl vol) HPT recalculates the VE Table.

So I looked at the whole VE table, it wasn't what I remembered putting in there.

I think what I did was build the VE table first, then changed the displacement and never noticed the VE table had changed.

I'm not sure it changed 40% though.....

I'll fix that and let you know how it goes.

that accounts for 17%. once your error gets large the percent to correct may measure 40% but in reality you may only need half of that to reel it back in.hence everybody banging the paste special gong. i think you will have this screamin by weekend. love that year/model nova btw

yeah but havnt been on in a while. performance trucks too. been tuning subarus open source lately and the method is a pia. maf sensors on a turbo car?????

I watched my buddies WRX on the dyno and the guy tuning it. Was in the Seattle area. The guy was sharp. But I stayed out of the way. Some of those modified Subs make a buttload of power.

So I uploaded a new tune and got more data. I ended up just using the VE table that was in the PCM when I read it on the bench.
Car is much happier, esp off idle. Still 20-25% rich. I'll tweak those cells and run it again.
I'm going to be at the point where I need to then drive it and get more of the table set up. I guess I better put the seat back in......and it better quit raining. Oregon you know.

Thanks for the help! I did tune my LS1 in the vette, but it's MAF only and I just never got to the VE portion, so I'm new at this.

clean install. love the double open end on the cowl panel in the pic. 2 wastegates to a dump? intake will skew your ve also. i s your fuel system: pump>rails>reg>return?

Correct on the fuel system. Holley said to do it that way. Of course others disagree.....
All -8. Holley 12-1800 pump.
Twin scroll so 2 WG to a dump. Was cheaper than more flex joints an another Vband etc to merge to the main pipe. You know how it goes, another hundred here, there.

I made good progress today, decided to give my neighbors a break. :-)

Still playing whack-a-mole with the idle airflow (raf) and the timing and idle area of the VE table.
Understanding I'll need to come back to idle later, I'm now ready to drive the car and work on the non boost area of the table

when you get the ve closer at idle run the russk cfg . it will stabalize idle greatly.

I had the Russ k config loaded.
Drove the car today. Turned out that idle areas were rich, the drive around areas were near 30% lean.
Making good progress. Idle is quite good too. Even in gear.
Fun stuff!

Mine was quite rich to start with as well on a canned 5.3 with a high ram intake. Took a good bit of fooling around to get it back normal but it is doing well now. I started quite rich and slowly leaned things out. Was close to 9:1 in boost, lol. Now at 11 it is tire spinning happy.

isn't the tuning nearly as satisfying as the building?
