2004 GTO 5.7 cranks 3 seconds no start

Buddy's got a 2004 GTO with the 5.7 that i am going to look at tomorrow that cranks for 3 sec then stops. I have not looked at the car yet but I am assuming its the common key F.O.B problem possibly a bad body control module. Question is will turning off vats solve this problem ? Also I was told that you do not have to write entire for disabling vats if it's not under the OS tab. The GTO vats is under systems tab. Just wondering as write is safer than write entire
