2008 Hummer H3 3.7 I5 VATS - new key

I just got contacted by a person that lost his key to his Hummer, and had a new one cut by a locksmith, but the Hummer doesn't recognize the key and therefore doesn't start. Will it work if I connect my HP tuners and disable the VATS, as its a known problem on the H3 that over time the ignition wears out and doesn't recognize the key.

Guess my question is just will it work or must he go to the dealership and get ripped a new one to buy whole new ignition and key?

My son is active duty USAF and has an h3 that is giving him trouble with the security system. I’m wondering if I can just go visit with the laptop and turn it off for him. He doesn’t make enough money to have the car towed to a stealership and repaired
