how to learn to tune. I looking for a good books

I looking for a book to learn how tuning programmable engine management systems.

Please tell me "Ultimate GM Tuning Guide for HP Tuners" book it's a good publication to learn overall Stand Alone tuning or only for GM tuning ?

I have Greg Banish's books and it's a good publication but dedicated for dyno tuning

I bought a Julian Edgar's book "Tuning programmable engine management" but I think so... it's for beginner user.


I have a some theory but zero practice

banish is a good start also look for a book called "internal combustion fundamentals by John b Haywood" its a good place to start understanding the underlying physics.

I understood a internal combustion fundamentals. I learned about sensors, wiring, speed density, MAF and Alpha-N strategy or any enrichment of engine, what it's a retard and advance ignition (and when we apply), but it's only theory...

I looking tips&tricks, for a road tune, which very useful. The create fuel map is fairly understandable, but ignition map it's more difficult and dangerous (knock) - I think so

Perhaps "fear has big eyes"...

Dan Maslic book "Master EFI Tuner" GM EFI is pretty good, it has theory as well as examples using HPT & EFILive the tuning principles are the same though. Also visit ED Mowton site ERM Performance Tuning, there is a tuning book using HPT.

I teach Engineering and Engine Management Systems at UW College of Engineering. Any book recommendations for a summer club (some additional materials: beginner's and intermediate level)?

I recommend learning how carbs work and mechanical advance distributors first

then simply read the manuals to popular stand alone (AEM, Haltech, megasquirt) to gain electronic knowledge

I have been watching this forum for years and just recently become a member . I really like to do decent job in engine modifications with passion and care , then tuners screwed up everything (three different tuners) , for that I start learning to DO IT MYSLEF and after 7 years of driving my truck I never felt happier ; although I am not done yet.

Never too late ? yes that's right ;)
