Knock Retard Valid Max

Question.. I'm confused on this parameter. I'm having a hard time understanding the description. What exactly does the Knock Retard valid max do?

I believe it has to do with the algorithm used to trigger a knock sensor fault code. Used to be 12 or something on older stuff, then GM changed the calculation and it's 2 or 3 on newer stuff.
