Bad Tuner?

I'm in Houston and just spoke with a tuner who does a MAF tune and will tune Trans. Claims the torque tables and vve tables do not need to be done and he does not do that. On a scale od 1 to 10 I have maybe a level 2 knowledge of tuning, but from everything I've read the Gen 5 engines need a "deeper" level of tuning including the VVE and torque tables. Am I correct or is this guy a lazy bad tuner? I'm not naming him so feel free to speak bluntly. If he is not a good tuner any recommendations for tuners in Houston?

Sounds like a lazy tuner more than anything. MAF tune is fine if you just want to get up and running but it probably will not have the same drivability as if its fully tuned. Also yes the Torque tables are very important. If you dont change them you will basically be robbing yourself of power if you make too much power. I've been learning to tune the Gen 5s myself and there is a ton that goes into a good tune.

Depends on your mods. If you're doing simple bolt ons like intake and headers there is really no need to mess with the VVE or VT tables. If you're doing a cam or aftermarket blower, then you def need VVE and VT tuning among other things.

Gen V I have the best luck with MAF and VE tuning no matter what is done to it. I hardly ever have to touch a virtual tq table. If the tuner knows how to properly tune the maf and ve for the gen v platform, then the stock tq table will follow along for the ride. To be blunt, most people change the tq table and pedal table which is to cover up the improper maf and ve tune. It's way more than just failing the maf and tuning ve.........

As long as nothing is limiting it is true you don't really need to tune the VT Tables or DD. I've tuned both ways for various reasons. My personal car has the stock Virtual Torque table. I've seen no reason to change it. When you change airflow in/out of the engine significantly such as heads and cam there is a much much higher probability that you need to tune VT and DD to get it to drive well.

If car is almost stock and torgue model is close - u don’t need to change it. - start to make big power and
Cams or stall. And u have to change

Listen to this guy. Its amazing how important proper fueling can do for quality driveability in a Gen 5.

Can you steer me in the right direction to find a guide (in HPT forums or elsewhere) on tuning VVE/MAF for E78? Searched the forums and I didn't find one. Thanks

Greg Banish/Calibrated Success just came out with some good training material on the Gen V stuff. ;)
