The timer is set to "basic", Map is On. As a newbie, I think I am doing something wrong, but I am not sure what.

Most likely that channel is set to something that is reporting that as a value. If you go to the Camera Preview screen, you can tap on the Data A box, then scroll down to the "Data A:" selection to see (and change) what its set to.
For data channels that have a large number of digits, you may see the screen clip the text a bit, or add "..." to the end, but this shouldn't be an issue for most data channels that are available.
