If they weren't tunerlocked then they are likely corrupted due to flashing an incompatible file.
X36 is a generic error code that basically says the seed/key algo is not stock(ie tunerlocked), most common read is the ecm being tunerlocked, less common reason would be a corrupt ecm.
Means you didn't read the ECM and you likely read the AWD system module only.
Try reading just the ecm in the read window.
Unfortunately you are correct
They probably saved the tune to their laptop or pc, thats pretty typical.
Our product does not support mac so if thats what you are running virtual box on that is likely the issue.
