i have and ELM327 somewhere, the bluetooth variant. but get this, it absolutely will not work on my 2002 Suburban. i purchased a harbor fright device and it worked perfectly.

that's a valid guess.
on some platforms (vw) the evap purge valve gets stuck open without triggering a code.
this creates a vacuum leak, however the engine sucks air from the end of the evap...
