    E38 ECU trans question

    HI
    i have a 2012 5.3 Gen4 RPO LMG engine and 4L60E 17pin transmission
with a E38 ECU do you need to use a TCU computer or does it run the trans by itself?
if the E38 will run it by itself what year do i need to get?
    thanks

    A 2014 5.3 should be a DI engine. An E38 won't run that.

2014 Express van 5.3 was still port injected, neener neener!

But, this is why specifying your parts by "E38" or any other ECM type is nearly meaningless. E38 has 4 or 5 different service numbers, meaning, the board-level hardware inside is different and they can't interchange. YEAR/MAKE/MODEL (and engine RPO is nice to include, too). Basics, people. Come on.

    You already have the ECM?

ALL T42 TCMs interchange hardware-wise, but not all T42 OSes will work with all ECMs. I believe the only breakpoint is pre-'09 and post-'09. Something about the comm protocol changed there, and early won't talk to late and vice versa.

    T42 service numbers:
    24234503
    24223112
    24226863
    24230461
    24235340
    24235776
    24239224
    24239427
    24242391
    24243901
    24251062
    24252114

So if you were to go to ebay and search for one of those numbers plus 'programmed to your VIN' and gave the seller 1GCNKPEA9BF140932 (which is a 2011 Silverado 4L60E), that would get you a compatible TCM.

I don't think anything but 17-pin units were in use as of 2011. Some platforms got the change earlier than others but that started in like '07-'08.

Any 17-pin 4L60E will work with any 2009-up or whatever TCM. I'm unsure of the exact breakpoint but you couldn't use a TCM OS old enough to not work with the trans, because an OS that old wouldn't work with the ECM you already have because of the change in comm protocol. Get it?

You need to get an ECM from an 07/08 model Silverado/Tahoe/Etc that came with a 58x Engine and a 4L60 trans. License credits for that, make sure your injector data/MAP data matches your engine, and start tuning

Wouldn't it be easier to keep the existing ECM and get/program a TCM to match, especially since the stock TCM calibration from a 2011-2012 anything will work out of the box with a late 17-pin transmission? '07-'08 Silverado was all 15-pin, for both 4L60E and 4L70E.

Cost for a built 6L80E is pretty pricey in my neck of the woods right now. Even wrecking yard stuff is pricey. I'm with you though. More gears, more better.

Found a decent guide for the 4L60 but I don't see your broadcast code.

T42/4L60E(/65E/70E) was used up thru 2014. Nothing 'bout T43 stuff here. Any ECM OS from the post-comms-change breakpoint (mid 2009 or something?) will talk to any post-comms-change TCM, whether it's T42 or T43. Or so I have been told, that the ECM OS is no different whether it was originally built as a 6 speed or 4 speed.

1GCNKPEA9BF140932 is a 4.8L/4-speed 2011 Silverado. That TCM OS would work just fine with the ECM from a 2012 6-speed Yukon. Allegedly.

    2011 Express 6-speed/T43, ECM OS 12639835
    2011 Express 1GCWGFCA5B1134609 4.8 1303581293.hpt

2011 Silverado 4-speed/T42, ECM OS 12639835 (same as above)
    2011 Silverado 1GCNKPEA9BF140932 4.8 E38 (4L60E T42 24252956) 1346009422.hpt

You're right. When I saw LMG I incorrectly thought they all had T43's

If it's a swap vehicle with none of the factory integration crap I don't think it matters if you mix and match platforms for ECM & TCM. Not a swap would probably have issues, like PRNDL display, tow/haul etc.
