Thread: VCM Scanner randomly disconnects while logging

VCM Scanner randomly disconnects while logging

The scanner will randomly stop logging. Sometimes after 12 minutes, sometimes after 2. I have disabled the "turn off usb power to save power blah blah blah" on all the USB ports. The cable is damn-near brand new as it's the one that came with my MPVI3. It's not wiggling around, either.

Yes, I could take another laptop and see if it starts happening on that, but I'm not there yet.

Did you ever resolve the issue? I?m running into the same issue after updating my MPVI3

No I haven't yet. The other day it ran fine for the entire 23 minute drive and then next time it stopped after 1.5 minutes.
    It's damn frustrating.

I'm having connection issues also now that I have a 3. My 2+ was fine.

This is usually my sign to throw away the usb cable and get another.

    It usually fixes it.

I also routinely take cotton swabs like a qtip but for industrial use with alcohol and clean my USB ports and rebend the little tangs that hold the connection tight.

Not a bad thing to do, but other devices have no issue staying connected.

It's the new cable that came with the MPVI3.

Maybe you should try another cable, this has happened to me very often and I have had to vote for many cables, find a normal one that does not require a specific voltage

Same, although mine is secured on the passenger-side area. Still doesn't address the issue.

For the second issue, go to Vehicle -> Repoll for Supported Parameters

After I made this amount of parameters in the list became less than before when I could record it. Now I cant find and add it using keyword.

Anyone find a solution. Im having this same issue. Tried diff cables and diff laptops.

I read some older posts and they were talking about logging too many channels and maybe too many histograms. I have a ton of both so I might go remove some that I dont need and see if that helps.

I removed a few channels and decreased the polling interval for stuff like Idle Desired RPM, PRNDL status, Fans, ECT & Trans Temp. Well see if that helps.

No, and the only response from HPTuners has been to "replace with a quality cable" so I'm guessing they don't have an answer for this. I don't think it's a matter of number of channels or histograms because I've been using the default layout and had the issue when I was only logging 10 channels.

I'm pretty sure its the cable. I cut back the channels I was logging and histograms and still had a couple lock ups. The other day I was messing with truck wiring and just set the ODB2 port connected to my MPVI3 into the glove box from under the dash and didnt experience any issues logging until one day my daughter opened the glove box and boom logging stopped for everything except my wideband which is connected to computer via serial. I have not had the issue one time since so im pretty sure its all in the USB C connection on my MPVI3 that was causing the issue.

I bought a brand new cable, and the cable is completely free and does not move while logging. This is a regular USB-A to USB-C cable. I am going to try another laptop with USB-C / USB-C and see if there's any difference.
There is no rhyme or reason when it stops.

Try getting rid of a bunch of your useless pids. GEN3s don't like logging a whole bunch of pids.

You have your long term fuel trims turned off. No use logging them. Your car doesn't have an IAC. No use logging it. There's a bunch more you could do without.

Per the suggestion, I removed about 10 channels that I wasn't actively using and I have successfully had 2 back-to-back 10-minute logs without disconnecting. Not ready to call it resolved yet, but seems much better.
