Question Trying to help a friend who got ripped off.....

    Good Afternoon Everyone,

I have a friend that saved up for a while and bought a stage 2 cam, was recommended to a local guy that is supposed to be THE guy for LS Tuning. He paid the guy $250 for the tune, it took the guy about a month to get back to him with a tune file, and the truck runs OK. The truck has terrible low-end, poor throttle response in the low end, and the truck frequently dies out when in-gear and moving slowly....like when he is creeping through a parking lot and goes to make a turn, the truck will stall out on him. I own a transmission shop and use HPtuner all the time to adjust lock-up on 6L80/90 transmissions all the time to prolong the life of the converter/transmission post-rebuild......but I know very little about tuning for a cam. I am hoping and praying that someone on here can take a look at the tune, log file, and cam specs I am attaching and make some edits to the tune that will make the truck run like it should with this cam. The truck is bone stock other than the stage 2 sloppy cam. I am not one to ask for handouts, but I really want to help my friend out and I've seen so many kind and helpful users in this community. I just spent a very large amount of money to add air-conditioning to my transmission shop so my techs and builders don't stroke out in this Florida heat.....otherwise I would just go the MailOrderTune route and cover it for him. I would be willing to CashApp someone $100 to fix this tune for me/my friend, thank you in advance for anyone willing to help!

    CAM SPECS:

    Intake Lift/Duration: 585 / 283
    Exhaust Lift/Duration: 585 / 286
    LSA: 112
    ICL: 108

**There are 2 values written down on the cam spec sheet that are not next to anything indicating what they are. The guy that did the tune lost the cam spec card and gave my friend back a ratty piece of paper with stuff scribbled on it.**

Those 2 values written next to each other are 228/230

***Please note, I have been using HPTuners for a while and have read a lot on the forums, but posted this in the wrong area originally. In my original posting of the above information, a kind member of the community reviewed the attached tune and was able to confirm that the tune was almost fully stock, with only minor adjustments made to make the truck idle (and it doesn't even do that very well). I am just trying to help my friend out, $100 CashApp, Paypal, or Venmo to whoever is willing to adjust this tune file and make the best of it

    Thank you again, in advance!

That's a terrible pid list. Do you know how to save and load a channel config?

I know how to add different things to the list of things that are logged while recording, but I don't know which things to add to that list. I've worked strictly within the transmission sector of things, as that's why I purchased the MPVI 3 in the first place. I do want to learn the engine side of things, but that is a journey I just started and I am nowhere near capable of doing what my friend urgently needs done right now.

Big favor to ask, totally understand if you decline....but could you tell me which things need to be added to the PID list?

    Thank you buddy

If you're going to work with someone to email tune it you'll need to know how to save and load a channel config. It's not hard at all but some people seem to really struggle with it.

Instead of telling you want to add, it's easier to send a channel config and have you load it and start scanning.

    Injector duty cycle is 94%.
    25lb injectors.
You need injectors to start with

and let's pray that "SS2" cam is NOT a china knock off... you know the $100 SS2 cams that are all over Sham-A-Zon, and Fleabay... On the sheet of specs-there is no mention of the manufacturer for the cam.. some good reading here; https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...camshafts.html

That cam card you mention, does it say WHO the manufacturer is? Elgin is the ORIGINAL producer of the SS2, otherwise known as the E1840P cam... China has been copying/knocking it off and selling it for dirt cheap on the discount junk web sites. If it's a white box china copy-I'd pull the cam OUT to replace it, along with larger injectors. You did not mention what valve springs he put in... Hopefully something name brand Like Pac 1218's... Lots of JUNK china springs being sold as well..

Search for a set of these; GM Part #12613412
The injector data is readily available due to Blind Squirrel being so kind to have posted it up previously. If you need the injector data for your tune to work with these injectors, I can link you to the post where the data can be found. If you decide to pull the cam to replace it, there are much better camshafts available than the SS2... Your "friend" also has a TERRIBLE combination with 33" tires, and 3.73 gears.. He is going to be SLOWER off the line with that cam/tire/gear/converter combo than he was with the factory cam.. He is also going to need a stall converter if he wants to keep the SS2 cam that he has.... TERRIBLE combination in my opinion. Tuning it won't be hard... living with it on the streets is going to be UNBEARABLE... and having every old woman on a bicycle blow past him when leaving a red light is going to get old. In my opinion-for what it's worth-he needs a TORQUE cam.. Something like the Truck Norris, or one of the offerings from Summit like the Torqinator. With a smaller cam he could get away with the Trailblazer torque converter-which has a little higher stall in the low to mid 2000's, but he will still need to change the gearing.. Numerically he will need 4.10's MINIMUM, or 4.56's would be better. You mention you are a trans builder.. the tune shows he has a 4L60E.. You must know that is not going to last long term. Do a mph/rpm calculator and figure what his engine RPM's will be in 4th gear, torque converter locked up, at say 60 MPH... That should make it abundantly clear WHY it's not going to work. The RPM's work out to 1595.... Good luck with that.. Only a really good tune with massive changes to the shift scheduling, and TCC apply tables-and every known after market billet, spit-shined and polished part inside will give that trans a short term chance at survival. Oh, and tire size needs to be updated in the tune as part of the shift scheduling updates and changes.

and I feel you on the heat... Here in Texas we are averaging over 100 degrees every day-and we don't have the ocean breeze that so many Floridians get to experience..

Ive got 6 of those Chinese "SS2" cams here i took out of trucks. They are terrible, had one start flaking 3 lobes off and ruin a engine.

If it were me, i would just put the stock cam back in just to make it easier on everybody.

I had the same problem when I was low on money. I found nice master but price for his work is much bigger then others who is on market. I hope your friend fixed this problem!
