    Ls4 tuning

Im working on Installing a tsp Chopacabra 214/222 .550/.550 108 LSA in a 08 grand prix. Wondering if anyone had tuned one and would share the file for reference purposes. Never messed with anything FWD or that was not a heavy 4wd truck/suv. I'm sure being lighter that I will be able to put a little more timing into it. Planning to dd the car with a 3200 stall. Bought valve springs to go with the combo. Ls4 aluminum block 243 headed original afm motor. If anyone can lend any positive advice I would love to hear it.

I'd treat it like any other LS tuning. Probably hard to find a sample file. Those weren't popular to mod.

I always have been the idiot for unpopular things. Im wierd i love a northstar. I always talked about putting a northstar in something like a 2 door accord to have some fun.

Thank you, If i run into problems do yall still offer remote tuning? i have dealt with pcmofnc before and was very happy with the outcome. it was a old black box pcm. 1+ for you guys.

Me too I've always wanted to do RWD Northstar Fbody, SHO swap Ford Probe, 3800 SC in a truck, and Triton V10 in a Mustang or Thunderbird.

I love Northstars too. I cut my diag teeth on those things in the very early 90s. Come to think about it, I should HATE them LOL

Yes they're a really neat design. Too bad there isn't more aftermarket. There's that guy out of Canada who makes a head stud upgrade kit. Other than that there isn't much. Lot of potential there. SC on the XLR is cool, but I think the fact that the LS exists means that the N* doesn't get any love.

The LS4 5.3 is not the same as a truck 5.3... that truck cam may not work/fit, as the LS4 5.3 is a shorter block...

It'll fit. It's the crank that's shorter. Same 243/799 heads as the rest.

Block heads all that are the same. Crank snout is shorter but you can slap a normal ls crank in it, a non ls4 timing cover and you have a 5.3 aluminum block that fits anything. The intake is turned backwards (throttle body on trans side) but a truck intake will fit with relocating the oil pressure sender to the oil filter housing or some have done the intake swap without relocating the opsu but it's a tight fit. I am going to do that swap one day since I have a free truck intake laying here. Thank you though for caring enough to bring up the difference because I thought the block was shorter was well until I did some reading. No harm taken.

I've used his thread inserts on 3.6 penastars and as well as kis/Hyundai. He is a really awesome dude with tons of knowledge. He works out of his hunting fishing cabin alot.

I bet the Northstar starters replacements made you alot of money. Everyone hates on the design but truthfully they are easier to change can 99% of cars pn the road today. Best part is you don't have to get under and get greasy. Because the only Northstar that didn't leak oil were the ones that had run dry of oil.

I could probably do it but to be honest I have not seen a single modified FWD LS car. They just aren't too common. I'd treat it like any other LS car and just tune away.

Ever seen a Northstar shoe-horned into a Pontiac Fiero?
I saw a really clean one once and loved it.
Looks like you can find a few online if you're interested.

I have not, But that has to be a death trap. i did see a NORTH* in a street rod. something like a 39 ford coupe. Was bad ass. The owner said it was smooth as silk. That is another nutty thing I would do.

Understood. I was curious about how much timing one would take since its lighter but much more traction than a truck. The ls4 is very similar (I think) to a LM4. I don't have a dyno to see about adding timing but i added a couple degrees to my main spark table in cruise and wot area's and its not logging any knock. Do you think that is a safe approach? I only run 93 octane in it. I have also shortened the recovery rate and my logs look good. I have a truck intake i am going to swap onto it sometime while doing the cam & stall so i'm sure I will have to calibrate my airflow model but it has been done before. I plan to daily the car so driveability is important to me. If I have to I will bring the car up to you guys and let you tune it on the dyno. I'm in North Myrtle so its a day trip. If you have any other advice to offer I would love to hear it. I am a aspiring tuner and do like using the scanner to see changes & research into them & figure it out on my own.

I am in the same boat. I picked up a 2007 GXP that needed a new forward band cheap--- then decided to do cam and truck manifold while i have it apart. The car drives good already, but has issues with idle and coming up to stops wants to stall.

been watching videos and reading posts, seems most people start with idle timing at 20 degrees advance and reduce the VE tables under 800rpm by 20% then reduce the under over cam swings by 50%?
