Failed to Read and Save - 2023 Durango R/T

I just received a MPVI3 and Dodge Smart Access Cable, and attempted to read the PCM of my 2023 Dodge Durango R/T Tow & Go. I'm using the latest stable release version of VCM Editor (5.0.4)

"Get Info" did not automatically identify the PCM, I assume because it is a 2023. But it's my understanding it's the same PCM as a 2021 and 2022, so I manually selected GPEC2A

The VCM Editor then went through the 10 - 12 minute read process successfully and prompted me to save the file when it was done. When I chose a location to save, I received 2 errors back to back.

    and then

    2nd_Error.JPG

After acknowledging the errors, I checked the location I chose for the save and there was no file present.

I have the Smart Access Cable installed, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Do I need to run the Beta version instead of the stable version?

I did notice in VCM Editor, the "Help" drop-down menu doesn't list a "MPVI3 Verification Code" option as the instructions included with the interface call out, but since my interface was already registered to my account by HPT when I bought it, I didn't think it would be an issue. Although maybe this is a sign I need the Beta version instead.

Is Beta required when using an MPVI3 interface?

You need to send your PCM in to HPtuners to have it unlocked. Without doing that there's nothing you can do.

Right, thanks for the response ... I have a donor PCM to send in but HPT needs a read of the OEM PCM to be included with it. It's my understanding I should be able to read the calibrations without modding the PCM, and then I can send the file along with the donor PCM to HPT for modifying. Then I can write back to the modified donor PCM.

The error I'm getting seems to be an issue with validation after the read is performed, and not a security issue of doing the actual read. VCM Editor did go through the read process successfully. The DIC in the vehicle went through the typical error messages for about 10+ minutes you'd expect while the modules are being queried ... and I did get a prompt to save the config file when it was 100%. But it then gave a checksum error when I tried to complete it.

Not sure how I can send a stock calibration file along with the donor PCM if I can't read the OEM PCM without modifying it?

In the post you linked, it states:

    - As of 12/21/2015, ALL 2015-2017 Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/RAM PCMs that are sent in for modification must have a stock read performed before it is shipped to us.

NOTE: If you are sending us a spare PCM, please make sure to send a read from the stock PCM. While we can unlock it as a blank PCM without a read, you would have to flash the correct OS/VIN onto the PCM as well as most likely do a throttle re-learn and/or SKIM re-learn. If you can supply a stock read, we can flash the PCM here. The stock read must be done as a GPEC2A, 2015+ Dodge or a GPEC2, 2015+ Dodge (depending on which PCM the vehicle is equipped with. Please see the Dodge PCM Identification Thread if you are unsure which PCM you have). If you do not have access to perform the read, please download the latest update from your customer page and try again.
As another piece of info, I have AlfaOBD and performed a read of the Engine ECU. It confirms this is a GPEC2A PCM

Exactly. That's what I think as well. Although HPT and Whipple (this is in preparation of a Gen 5 3.0L Whipple) both confirmed they could support tuning of the 2023.
Since it is the same PCM as the 2022, there must be some validation going on before allowing the save to occur.

Not sure if I need the Beta version, or need to do something different in the read (like some override of the checksum, etc ...)?

Beta fixed it up for me ...

I now see the MPVI3 in the "Help" menu ...

    Beta_Help_Menu.JPG

And when I went to get config, it prompted me for an interface firmware update

    Firmware_Update.JPG

After the update, it properly identified the vehicle and TCM, but still didn't auto detect the PCM.

    Identified_Modules_Vehicle.JPG

So I manually selected GPEC2A 2018 + and it performed the read

    Successful_Read.JPG

And this time, it allowed me to save it successfully.

    Problem solved!

Good deal. I would imagine now it's just a matter of sending everything in to them.

Yep, I'll be sending off the donor PCM and emailing the stock calibration file. Then it's just a matter of waiting the 10 - 12 weeks for the Whipple lead time. So ... most likel sometime in March.

In the meantime, I'll drive the vehicle with the OEM PCM and hold off on installing the unlocked one until closer to the Whipple install .... as not to set P1400 yet. It only has 4700 miles on it right now, so if anything is going to fail early, I'll get warranty to cover it. Come March, I'll swap the unlocked PCM in and drive it for a few days just to ensure it's all good ... then I'll install the Whipple, which will of course negate my power train warranty.

second what @Monstar asked - do you mind sharing your stock 2023 read (PCM and TCM)? I have a 2017 durango rt and i like to compare the newer model years. helps me to understand how things work. Looking forward to your posts in late March and April after your whipple arrives!
