Starter Tune Samples for 10R80 and Gen 2 3.5 Ecoboost

I have been working for several months on fine tuning the engine and transmission in my personal 2018 Expedition and am very happy with my results. Figured I would share some template files for those who were looking for a good starting point. The Ford side of this forum doesn't seem to share as much as the GM side so hoping to change that.

For reference, my Expedition is essentially stock. CVF titan v2 intercooler (intercooler volume adjusted for in tune settings), colder spark plugs, colder t stat, and grill shutter delete are my only "mods".

Attached is a complete tune file, as well as my stock read for comparison. Don't just try to flash it or copy it as depending on application, your tables could be different. I believe it will copy right over on 17-19 F150 and 18-19 Expeditions, but be sure to double check as I can't guarantee anything. Flash at your own risk. If you don't have a CVF titan v2 intercooler, you'll need to change the intercooler volume back to stock under the airflow/speed density tab.

Starting point was on the transmission. Started with the latest TCM update from Ford directly (they have made several improvements over the years). I used this as a starting point. Looked through many recent 10r80 files from newer vehicles, including the Mach 1 Mustang, and implemented some of the nice updates from Ford. The shift schedule is extremely dialed in as I spent several months testing it and tweaking it. Gear changes are perfectly evenly spaced throughout the entire rev range. All upshift skip shifting is eliminated. Highway downshifting comes much easier now. TCC won't lock until 5th gear and when it does lock, it locks hard and there is as little slip as possible. Shift pressures increased. Allow for firm shifting in sport mode now. Some other changes but those are the big ones that come to mind.

As far as engine goes, using the forums and the inside of some other professional tunes I have seen, I was able to make a good starter "daily" file. It is safe for 87 octane as I left most tables related to spark alone, but I always recommend a minimum of 91 octane. Big safety limiters left in place. Typical
other limiters removed or adjusted. This tune will probably satisfy 90 percent of people just looking for a little more out of their f150 or expedition. Estimate this tune adds 50 HP and 50 TQ give or take.

Just trying to get this out there to help people out as I wish I had something like this when I started learning my own tuning years ago. I am very picky and had previously released templates but was not happy with a few things, so reposting.

Disclaimer, I do not do this for a living, although I do tune quite a few vehicles for friends and family as needed. I am very nerdy and picky and would not share this information if I had not tested it and was confident with it. I have had a variety of training from the Tuning School, Evans Performance Academy, and HP Academy, and have spent countless hours on this forum reading and reviewing tunes and data logs.

If anyone tries it or has more suggestions, I am all ears. Let me know what you think.

    bmpcamry,

I give you props for sharing your work on this forum as many are tight-lipped. This platform especially, has very little information and I think you've done all of us a favor. Trans side looks good, and it's one of the best I've seen compared to other 10r80 files that I've seen. FYI if you want to achieve firmer shifts, you can add pressure to the stroke pressure adder section. Other's have their own way of doing it but that's my take. Did you notice any TCC difference when adding pressure to the capacity intercept portion? I added some previously and didn't notice anything TBH, maybe didn't add enough.

Great work man, thanks for sharing.

No I didn't notice any difference on capacity intercept unfortunately. The 6r80 seems to have more options for TCC ramp versus the 10r80. The guys at MPT have the TCC figured out pretty good. Still trying to figure out their magic sauce for my own stuff lol.

I actually discovered a weird issue with downshifting between 6th and 7th gear on my way home from work this morning, so I took down the attachments until I can look it over and will update again with an updated file. I have some sort of coastdown overlap I believe.

Still playing with stroke pressure adders too! Always more to learn!

    Thanks for the compliment.

Here is an updated V2 file, fixed the downshift issue, had a bit of overlapping that I somehow messed up at some point.

I'll play around with some stroke pressure adders and if I find some success I will post a v3 up.

Also if anyone uses the engine tune, feel free to put pedal map ratio back to stock and use the pedal characteristic tab instead to mess with the throttle. Still doing lots of testing with the pedal map ratio and trying to create some math to better plot what is going on with that table in VCM Scanner.

Here's another trans only file for people to try, a few changes, also added in 1-3 skip shift only for low throttle application, this seems to help make the transmission feel less busy at lower throttle application speeds. I noticed that Ford eliminated the 3-5 skip shift in pretty much everything 21 and newer, but they keep the 1-3 shift. 1-3 has always felt fine to me but 3-5 and 4-6 had to go, and apparently Ford agreed at some point.

Something I failed to mention, after you flash these changes, it doesn't hurt to reset your transmission adaptives and KAM as well. I know it technically does it when you reflash but I do the extra anyways. The pressure changes can sometimes feel strange for the first 4-10 shifts, but once the computer adapts, everything irons out and feels how this thing should feel from the factory.

I have a question, I am used to GM tuning, so the shift points are throttle position and MPH. These are throttle position and RPM, but the RPMs dont make a lot of sense to me UNLESS they are based on the "Trans Output RPM"???

Output shaft speed, correct. I haven't looked at his files but that's how it's setup. There are spreadsheets on the forum to convert to engine rpm.

Thank you for sharing. I did some analysis on your tow haul upshift and downshift OSS vs TPS values. I noticed that for upshifts 6-7, 7-8, 8-9, and 9-10 usually around 50% throttle that their is an overlap in OSS with the corresponding 6, 7, 8, or 9 down shift. An upshift can be commanded at the same time as a downshift for a lower gear. This seemed to cause an rare occasional irregular shift on a long trip I just completed while towing. I think it is very easy for this to happen because HP Tuners compare tools are very limited, and the scaling of the upshift and downshift tables are not the same and are irregular. I hope you take my post as a potential contribution and not criticism. I used your shift schedule as a template and modified it for my own use, it was very helpful. I appreciate what you have done and your contribution.Screenshot 2024-07-25 133045.png

I figured I would dump my '17 Raptor TCM tune in here as well if someone wanted to try it. TCM i.hpt
I love the removal of the skip shifting. I also raised the downshift and upshift of the upper gears to keep the RPMs above 1300rpm while cruising to keep the engine from lugging.

I used the factory tow haul schedule on that particular file, so not sure what Ford was thinking. I am actually usually pretty happy with the factory tow haul settings.

Figured I would post up my finalized base file I am using for my 3.5 10r80 trucks now, so here ya go. This particular one is still built off a 2018 Expedition since that is what I had at the time. The engine changes I use are also good for 91 octane and up on an otherwise stock vehicle for those who want to take a look at that and use some of the settings. I ran this particular engine file for over a year with great reliability and results.

As far as transmission goes, I have found that pressure changes really change vehicle by vehicle so this base file is basically scheduling and TCC stuff alone, everything else I have been dialing in person with the vehicles since it seems every 10r80 I tune feels a little different.

I tried many of these changes. I'm running into a what feels like a large shift delay between 6th and 7th gear. Any ideas on where I can look to correct that?

Thank you very much for sharing!!

The main problems I ran into was that there were sooo many different shift modes. I made 1 good shift table and pasted it to nearly all of the modes to make it feel more consistent.
Also, make sure your downshifts are not set too high. I made an excel file with graphs to make sure my downshifts and upshifts worked together well.

Got a question bmpcamry09, I copied the transmission side of your Gen 2 3.5 Ecoboost Base.hpt file and was running it on my 2018 raptor. For the first day it was shifting great and better than it ever has, then the 2nd day started to get real clunky/banging feeling when shifting. Any idea what this would be?

Is yours the 6 or 10 speed? Curious because I have questions if its a 10 speed. ZZP is on 28th street right?? I don't think its to far from where I work.

I wouldn't do a direct copy and paste, a lot of the Axis tables on the Raptor and F150 are different than the Expedition. You either need to change your Axis tables to match the Expedition file or go through each change individually and make sure it plays nice with your OS.

This is why a lot of pros don't share info on this forum, because unless your running a 2018 Expedition with the same OS, there are likely to be differences that can cause issues like your experiencing.

I've never had a customer who wants the exact same shifting in each mode, especially in a truck based application. Makes no sense if you do any towing, but do what works for you.

That Excel file with the graphs is on multiple forums. Tuning School has their own version too. But I have found the Cobb 10r80 Excel file to work the best for checking your spacing and downshifts/upshifts. As a rule of thumb, I usually have the downshift OSS anywhere from 50-100 rpm lower than the upshift in lower throttle areas as a baseline. You have to be careful with the downshift tables. If you space downshift tables out evenly like the upshift tables, your always going to downshift through every gear individually which can make the trans seem busy.

The Raptors have different trans tuning parameters versus the Expedition in my experience. It might not be happy with some changes you made.

2017 and 2018 was some of the worst years for 10r80 tuning if you haven't had any OS updates through Ford. Ford made a ton of improvements in 2019/2020 to the Raptor that they eventually pushed over to the other platforms. This is talked about extensively on the Cobb forums.

Most likely some Axis parameter differences between the file. If you do a compare and it greys out a bunch of parameters, that's your issue.

Do you have the 2021 latest ford file you can share from 10r80
