Hard to understand... So you updated to the latest version of HP, then your code returned? Hmmm. I can't say for sure what it is but I can say what I would do: Load it via the old software and old tune so it's Off again, then read the ECU with the new software. Then try tuning it with that new copy as your base.
I had a similar (but not the same) situation and that was the fix.
Optional possibility, maybe, was turning the code off didn't actually work and after xx time it returned? On my car HP can only turn off some codes, which I assume are non-smog related? You said B420 but I kinda assume you meant P420?
