customers truck im working on here, its a 2021 ram 3500 cummins , its got a bad / missing ecm. he semt it off for repair and hasnt seen it since. they said it wasnt fixable and then didnt send it back/ sounds fishy, hes wanting me to get it going for him. he doesnt want to spend the 3800 $$ for a new ecm. found a used on with the same pt # same transmission. hows the best way to reprogram vin and security keys?

so i asked local dodge dealer and they said only on a new ecm can they program the vin. on a used on they say they cant. i have a topdon phonix max that has secure gatway subscribition. it can reprogram vin on dodge but i tried it on this one and it says unsuccessful , is that acually true that once the vin is programed to a ecm its done for and cant be changed?

No it can be changed. I’ve done it lots but I use Cummins software to do it.

As far as the security keys, nothing needs to be done there, the ecm pulls it from the tipm every time it powers up, does its thing and good to go. With the vin it is stored in the ecm twice, as original vin and as current vin, both need to match.

Being a used ECM is a lot easier than if it were new. If you have an old read from the original helps. Let me know if you need help

you can use calterm to change the vins and key codes. what i always do on any 2019+ dodge is read out with hp tuners. it will give you the key codes and vin.. then if you ever brick the pcm you can recover it with calterm. i have had the worst luck with flashing 2019 - 2021 pcm's with hp tuners. i always use efilive. im able to do up to 2024 68 or aisin now with added power.
