read has been disabled in the tune

My 06 5.9 with a smarty jr that was properly removed wont let me touch it with hp tunes.... I've been researching through out hp tuner forums and all google has to offer. Is there really no simple solution for this? I did an obscene amount of research and was happy/confident to spend the 500 dollars on my MPVI3 and 2 credits... With absolutely no warning anywhere on the site that a smarty jr would stop me dead in my tracks. Requiring an OEM reflash? Or go hit up smarty and see if they'll help? I haven't felt this jipped in a long time... I'm really hoping engineer@hpt found the solution he spoke about back on 8/22/16 for 06-08 guys with locked tunes soon. Has anyone else had success getting their ECM freed up from smarty? whats the cost besides the initial 500 to even find out that this was a thing?

Is that something i can do? I dont think i have the ability to do that unfortunately and I saved for a quite a while just to get the MPVI3 and a decent computer to run it.

Get a stock reflash from the dealership probably cheapest option

Is the dealer my only option? I just read on here that some one was able to read with smarty installed. Is that feasible? Im not trying to sound rude by any means but im super upset and i feel like ive wasted almost a thousand dollars (not just hp but the computer to run it correctly) just to spend hundreds more to get this to work. Im just very interested in this and trying to learn but im not made of money. With the emails ive exchanged hp tuners knows there is an issue here and i researched this for months while saving to buy it and there was no mention of any issues. Ive also gone after smarty and theres nothing but finger pointing back and forth. Smarty denies everything and blames hp tuners software but they are truly the ones that locked my ECM and Hp tuners gave no warning that this could be an issue.

Smarty (the irony is i gave no context to the software i bought) -

So what you must have purchased is HP. Smarty does not lock the ECM at all. But for some reason the way that HP tries to read the ECM it doesn't work. It is something to do with their software and the way that it reads the ECM. All other things out there will read it just fine after the Smarty returns it to stock. So it is something in their software.

    Hp tuners -

From what I know the PCM would need to be flashed with a dealer type tool such as a Witech tool to completely remove the Smarty software.
With the stock flash being done it still has some of the smarty code left behind that will have issues with our software. With a dealer flash you should be able to read and write with our software. Once the interface is opened I do not think you are able to return it. That I would email sales@hptuners and speak with a sales rep to see if it is possible.

Smarty does lock the ECM from being read when a tune is applied and the read lockout is removed when flashed back to stock, smarty is known to leave some bits changed in the ECM that can cause issues with other platforms like EFILive and HP Tuners. It is what it is at this point, either get a dealership to flash a stock calibration so you have a true clean stock ecm or to work with or find someone that can do it for you for free or cheaper than a dealership. I know they do but they will only point fingers at HP tuners. My only grief with hp is they have known of this issue for years and have no warning at all anywhere on the site. They also spoke of a possible fix over 8 years ago. I should share the emails from smarty showing how absolutely positive they are that its all hp's fault and their smarty jr left absolutely nothing in my ecm.

Why I like EFILive, it just works, no need to “read” ecm’s to get a file to tune with, it’s all out there available to download and use. If I had an 06-07 bench ecm I could make a clean stock for you but I only got ecm’s for 2010 and up. HP Tuners could give you a tune file that you could write to your ecm with their software but they won’t.

I'm not much of a Cummins tuner, but I may be able to help you get a stock file. Post your VIN, ECM serial number, and operating system, and I'll see what I can do.

if you have nexiq and calterm you can flash a stock calibration back in it. just need the number off the side of the ecu.
