Controller unlocker timeout during writing, what am I doing wrong?

    - 0411 PCM
    - Using a bench harness
    - Using the current 5.0.4 software, and the MPVI2 firmware is up to date
    - Using "write entire" because I'm switching operating systems
    - "original tune" (tune that's currently on it) is for a 2002 Chevy Express Van 1500
    - The tune I'm trying to flash is for a 2004 Silverado 6.0

    What I'm trying to do:

I have an L29 454 that I'm doing a 0411 conversion on. I paid for the original tune from a 2002 Express van which is needed because it uses a 4 tooth crank reluctor and distributor like the stock L29 454.

I decided to convert to coil per cylinder which means I'm now using a 24 tooth crank reluctor and an LS style coil-per-cylinder ignition system.

So I took a stock 2004 Silverado tune file and simply edited it to work with my L29 454. Meaning I edited the VE, timing, fuel, firing order and such.

This modified 2004 Silverado tune is what I'm trying to flash. It's a Gen 3 tune on a Gen 3 PCM, but it's simply not letting me!

    Here's what's happening:

When I try to flash the tune using "write entire" (because I'm changing operating systems), I get a "Controller unlocker timeout" error and the programming fails. This bricks the PCM because I can't read/write to it after that.

I then recover the PCM using the pin grounding procedure, then I can re-flash the "original" tune onto it......But then I'm back to the beginning. If I try to program my updated tune it just fails and bricks the PCM.

    I entered support ticket #468761

I do not know how to change OS

never tried to do so myself

I send my controllers out for that as I didn’t even know the VCM Suite was capable of doing so

Does HPT claim that it is?

As far as I know changing operating systems is the only reason to use the "write entire" option. I've seen it mentioned here by HP tuners admin.

However, I've never tried it myself till now so I hope there's something procedural that I'm missing.

I’m sure you already know this but not all OS are compatible with all part numbers

    Least not with Mopar controllers

I don’t have any experience with Chevy

    Sorry man

Someone suggested the 04 Silverado file size might be too big for the 0411 since it originally came on a P59 PCM. 0411 had 512kb of memory, the P59 had 1mb. Thoughts?

I have a P59 but it'll cost me a $100 license to test this theory.

BTW windows says the file size is only 280kb, am I missing something?

    You can't write a file from a P59 to a 0411.

You would have better luck posting in the GEN 3 GM V8 section.

Your ticket consisted of "I purchased 2 credits, applied them, and I get an "unlicensed vehicle" message when I try to write the tune" to which our support tech did reply with the appropriate information.

He sure did, but it was the weekend and I was in the process of figuring things out on my own. Didn't realize I had to license the PCM too.

After I did, the programming problem happened.

So it'll cost me another $100 to flash the P59 PCM I have.......bummer

Using a P59 PCM worked as expected in case anyone else runs into this problem in the future.
