Thread: Questions on credits with editing/saving an existing tune.

Questions on credits with editing/saving an existing tune.

I'm new to tuning cars. Been working on them for years but just now getting into the performance side of it. I've got a 2006 GTO that I'm going to be doing a cam swap in the near future and have some questions about how the tuning and credits work. I've got a shop that is going to be doing the tuning when I get the cam swap done as there is no way I feel comfortable doing that yet.
    1. So if I have the shop tune the car, can I use the MPVI3 to save that tune as a back up in case I need to reload it in the future and will that require me to purchase credits to do that?
    2. When I get to the point I feel comfortable with editing the tune for future upgrades, will I then need to purchase credits with it having already been tuned by someone?
    Thanks for you help guys.

You can save the file you read from the car and re flash if needed. You will need credits to license your ecm only one time. Each interface that flashes the car will need to license your ecm once each. So the tuner will license it and you will also license.

you are on the right track!!! do not just drop your car off for a cam and a tune : )

purchase a interface and read the car

save that locally, not on a cloud

lic the interface and send it with the car when you are going to have the work done

*and do not let anyone install the aftermarket cam that does not both have the tools and experience to measure the centerlines, pushrod length, and valve to piston clearance. get all those numbers or better yet the scratch paper they were written on before you pay for the work

For the record, I agree with this post 100 percent. It sounds like the OP is going to do the cam swap then hand it off to get tuned. To the OP: be prepared to follow the quoted statement and I will add, I always check the spring specs. also. Along with all the other basics of spring specs., knowing the installed height, seat psi, and over the nose psi, will eliminate having to go back and check it if a problem arises. Oh ya, don't use cheap springs.

Most shops have done enough of these 18-20 year old cars to where they have unlimited license. I have people on occasion try to haggle price by using their interface but it doesnt work that way here. Especially considering my price stays the same if i have to license the vehicle or if i have a unlimited package for the car. Vehicles requiring more than 2 credits to license get the extra added to the bill.

Majority have already been tooned. Always open a compare file to see what changes were made. Most of these guys are changing about 4-5 tables on a cammed vehicle but some will booger up injector data on stock injectors or something else stupid.
