So here's the deal. I have a v6 Firebird, 1999, with the 3800 engine in it. I've gone through four alternators. I know what you're thinking - Jeez, this guy is an idiot. Didn't he figure there was something wrong after the first three? The thing is, they're dying at an accelerating rate. The first one lasted a couple years, the last one lasted me about a week, and the one on there now hardly made one trip before the voltage started to drop. I have no idea what could be causing it. I've already changed out the battery once. The symptoms are the headlights dimming, the voltage shooting up to about 15 for awhile, and then gradually going lower and lower until the system finally dies. I thought these cars had alternators with internal voltage regulators, but I'm not sure. If anyone can offer any help at all, I'd be really appreciative.
