    Beginner G8 GT trans tuning

Currently I'm trying to get my upshifts nailed down to where I want them.

I had the upshift times set to 0.09 but that is a bit too harsh for my liking, so for now I'm trying 0.2000.

I've pretty much disabled upshift TM from the start, so I'm concerned if increasing the shift pressure could cause damage over time.

So would my current settings be ok with an increase in shift pressure (Y,Z only) or would I want to enable upshift TM and start playing with STF/STFA's?

Personally I'd rather keep TM in play and let the TCM assist in achieving your desired upshift times. I'm a big fan in leaving all the masters "Enabled" and also leaving the factory Shift Torque Factor at "1". I also leave the Cold Factor alone.

I then make all the Shift Torque Factor Adders to "1" and the make big changes to the "Adder Multiplier" table. All the amounts in this table should be negative numbers to allow the reduction in TM.

You can basically be as hard or soft as you like and even choose to have less TM at lower rev's so it feels harder/firmer and then leave most of the TM in at high rev's so not to risk damage to your Trans at big torque. But that's just a personal preference but an example of how flexible the TM settings can be.

i know that if you set your shift times any quicker that .1, you will over lap in shifts. what i like to do is, up the shift firmness my 20 in each cell. if it too much subtract 5 from each or vise/versa. i also like to turn my max pressure up all the way. i did this when my gto had 5000 miles on it, now im at 65000 with no problems

I Dont Think Shift Times Under .1 Will Overlap. Most Of The Newer Gm Calibrations Have .000 For The Shift Times In The Main Tables, Another Member Has Seen Several Newer Gm Calibrations Setup Like This.

I Have Had Mine At .000 For Several Months Now. I Cant Stand The Lazy Slow Shifts And Would Rather Have A Firm Engagement In My Tune.

And are you using Upshift TQM with .000 shifts?

Right now I'm using some factor adders to bring upshift TQM down to roughly 45-55% at WOT. Shift times are 0.2000, but I think I could go with .1700 and not break my neck.

However, I also increased my 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 upshift pressures and can really feel 2-3 under light throttle...but its about the same as when I had upshift TQM turned off with stock pressures. So who knows whats best.

Is there a recommendation for upshift pressure tables?

This is my latest tune, please let me know if I'm way off base.

I'm considering lowering the shift time to .1500 or .1750.

I see you've lowered the shift times in the 4-5 and 5-6 shifts whilst still leaving most, if not all, the stock TM in during the shift. But as you've lowered the shift time shouldn't bump up the shift pressures for those shifts as you've done with all the other shifts in the "Y" pattern?

I figured I won't ever be getting to 5th or 6th gear under WOT conditions, plus I'm a little cautious of increasing pressure in those gears. I figure they are more for cruising.

    Or am I way off?

You are making logically very good sense! MPG gears. But if you quarter mile a lot and will see 130mph+ through the traps, then maybe there would be a 4-5 change depending on tyres are rear axle ratio.

How much damage can be done by disabling upshift TQM? I had it disabled for a couple weeks, but the low rpm shifts were too rough for me.

I'm just wondering if I can get better results from leaving it off.

Leave TM on and tune the trans until you get the shifts right. Have not heard of anyone (until........) that has turned it off and left it off.

Yeah have seen TM mean slow lazy shifts like a 1965 Powerglide, and heard of the opposite end of the experience, harsh shifts like yours.

In my own personal and humble opinion, around town cruising is better if it is seamless and quick. All or mostly unnoticable. Stomp on it and it is nice if they are snappy.
