Does the ECU actually use the oil pressure sender?(want to install aftermarket gauge)

I want to replace the factory sender with an external unit for my aftermarket gauge. Will unplugging and removing the stock oil pressure sensor hurt anything?

I would put a 'T' fitting in, leave the stock sensor hooked in on one side and route the aftermarket unit to the other side.

    good question.

I wonder if it does anything more than just illuminate the oil light, like pull timing or reduce power somehow...

I know the light doesnt even matter in your case...

    The best idea here.

might shut down if it sees no oil pressure

guess the best way is to try it and find out...

if it doesn't like it disconnected, do whatever you need to make it think its reading pressure... short, ground, resistor, etc.

I know on the LS1s its just for the oil gauge and really does nothing. Anyone else?

Because theres no room back there for both. My car doesn't use the factory GTO oil gauge so if thats all its for im ditching it...just trying to see if anyone knows if it is used or not.

I have been drilling and tapping for a port on the cover right above the oil filter that is used on some for an oil cooler. Leaving the computer sending unit hooked up.

Well I just found out from a friend of mine with a swapped LS2 in his malibu that the sensor is only used for the factory gauge on the gto. On the vette its used to shut down the car on low oil pressure.

Isn't that a switchable parameter in the tune?

Maybe but its off on the gto tune. I just got the fitting from autometer today and everything fits perfect.

guys its very simple, oil pressure sender has three wire
    1. 5-volts supply
    2. ground
    3. signal to pcm

jumper your aftermarket oil gauge wire to siganl wire and both will work fine, i did on many swaped engines. no need to replace orignal sender.

depends if the aftermarket gauge's sender outputs are the same as factory sender... ive come across some that use a completely different range from 0-5v and some that dont even use a 5 volt signal at all.
