Thread: 6L80 durability?

    6L80 durability?

Just trying to get a feel for what they can handle...I know they are rated for 439 lb-ft engine Tq.

How much power are you pushing through your 6L80 and how long have you been doing it? Anyone smoke a stock tranny yet?

I have tuned 2 G8's with superchargers that have made over 500 whp and torque both have no TM and are running with out issuses. Also a bud of mine has a 2007 C6 corvette with a katech 427, 3600 stall, no TM and its pushing 575 whp and 545 wtq with no problems for a year on that combo.

I have heard of people blowing them up but thats on cars with over 650 wtq.

2010 CTS-V has it. Granted the TM on that car is disgusting. The converter is the weak point on all apps. Trucks and SUV's will see failure quicker because of weight to HP levels. I am making 420+AWHP on 24's and the only thing to fail so far is the driveshaft yoke.

I dont beat on the truck everyday because I still have the stock converter and it will flash thru on the 2nd to 3rd shift at this power level.

The people we see failing the A6 are generally the type of people that also blow M6's, driveshafts and rear axles as well.

The fact that GM uses the 6L80E in light duty trucks speaks a lot in itself as midevil points out.

Though for the heavier trucks and the CTS-V GM goes with the 6L90E with stronger output stage, but still the same input as the 6L80.....BUT with a 6 bolt dual plate clutch converter for CTS-V.

You can upgrade to the 258 mm twin disk that is the sts-v/xlr-v and put that in a 6l80E.

Never thought about doing that......You have seen this done? Dont want the Denali to be a race car or feel like one, so this would be a great option for me.

i burnt my 4,5 and 6, was still giving it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, ended up twisting the output shaft, and lost all gears except reverse ... keep it under it's rated 6500rpm limit and u should be safe..

How do you set your Tq management during shifts?

The conversion needs a custom flex plate as well.

Maybe It isn't a good idea.......The word "custom" and 60K rig dont go well together.

intense motorsports had a g8 with over 700 rwhp, im sure they ran it hard, but they pulled the tranny at 18000 miles and said it needed new clutch packs.

but there are some people on the g8 board making a little over 600 rwhp on them and they have not had problems. well one guy did have a rebuild done by RPM, but still there are a lot still running out there.

the general idea i have seen is 500 WHP is ok to get decent life out of the tranny

The sts-v/xlr-v should use the same 3 bolt pattern as the 300mm converters.

Good point. I was thinking more of the CTS-V unit and its possible higher torque rating.

I don't understand this at all. My Escalade (2008) traps 113 - 115 MPH on a stock converter and I don't feel any "flash" through the 2/3 shift at all. I'm on 22's, so I'm sure I'm making more than 421awhp

I have been building these transmissions now for a while and have a few out there with over 500rwkw. The ones that get damaged are those with around 350rwkw. They suffer from breaking the 4-5-6 shaft. Probably from maintaining traction. We have since made billet shafts. The 4-5-6 clutch and the 3-5-R clutch are the weakest links. In saying that the clutch capacity is way bigger than most transmissions. T400 and Powerglide included. The calibration is the biggest issue by far. I have been working on cals for ages and am still having some trouble.

someone needs to come out with a custom O/S for the tcm, something that eliminates all the adaptive learing and get the trans control back to the basics!
