When messing with the VE table, I find myself wanting to smooth it, however there are always cells I want to keep unchanged. Is there a way you could set up smoothing with an option to "lock" selected cells, and then smooth around them (using their value in the calculation of course).

you can select the general area you would like to smooth and smooth only those cells.
