so long as the PCM isn't locked you won't have a problem modifying it

I really have to ask what you mean by "modified".
If it was just tuned by somebody else and not locked, no problem.
Locking could include anything from seed/key changes, improper VIN, disabled and or "wrong" checksum(s) or even a non GM operating system number.
If it is a custom calibration that has been locked, have the original tuner return it to stock.
