    E38 Speedometer ouput

I'm trying to get my Dakota Digital VHX gauges to display the speedometer output from my 2013 Camaro SS ECM/TCM. I have a Speartech standalone harness in which John has pulled an output from C1 X1J1 pin #57 to connect to the VHX "sender" port. I have verified that the wire is pinned correctly and that it has good continuity. When I try to calibrate the speedo, it says that I am not getting any "pulses" out of the ECM. Is there something within the tune that needs to be adjusted in order for this to work? Thanks in advance.

Have you actually put a scope on the output wire?

Not yet. What type signal should I see? Should this wire always have an output (pin #57), or can it be turned off in the tune?

It can be disabled. It should be a square wave.

    OK, I give....how and where,

Edit: I'm assuming you are talking about Serial,RepTOS,or disabled. I have it in serial. What do I set the different pulse numbers at?

Ok, John from Speartech said the wire he pulled from Pin 57 should work with a "Corvette TCM Tune". So I looked in the HPTuner repository for a 2011 Corvette tune and I updated the settings in "speedometer" to match (see attached Pic). I then tried to calibrate the speedo per the Dakota Digital instructions, but the speedo still wasn't seeing in pulses, . Just to verify the the DD VHX control box was working, I connected the speed sensor that came with the gauges to the VHX control box. I then used a cordless drill to spin it, and you could watch the pulses count up. There's definitely nothing wrong with the the gauges and I've done a continuity check on the wire that comes from Pin 57. So obviously it is something in the tune. I still need to track down a scope so I can see if the wire is putting out any signal at all and if so, is it the proper one....

The problem is you aren't doing some of the things asked of you, like scoping the signal. If you don't have the tools to check, then what do you expect?

DSteck, thanks for your reply and Merry Christmas! I've done everything you've suggested, except scoping the wire. I don't do tuning as a profession and don't have all the tools that you probably do. I have asked a friend to borrow his scope and will have access to it sometime this week. I am just trying to eliminate everything else that I can prior to scoping it. I realize you do this for a profession and probably get tired of answering "dumb" questions. I understand that, as I'm in a profession where I deal with that also. Before I post a question on here, I usually spend hours researching trying to find the answer. As you probably know, there is very little information on the Gen IV's and even LESS information on people doing retro's in older cars. Once again, thanks for your time and expertise.

I checked the output on the pin 57 wire today and I'm getting a constant o/p on the oscilloscope. Is this because of something not being correct in the tune?

I checked the output wire with a voltmeter and get 12.4 volts with the truck running. I tried driving it and it looked like the voltage remained steady at 12.4...

stupid question can you actually see speed on the PCM itself? IE it is getting speed sensor input?

Yes, the scanner is reading the speed perfectly. And when I use the "BUS" mode on the VHX gauges, the speedo works fine also. The problem with the speedo occurs when I try to use the "sender" mode on the gauges. When I set it in that mode, it expects to receive pulses from the Pin 57 in order to calibrate the speedo. Instead of a "pulse", all I seem to be getting is a constant 12.4 V.

Hi, Used this info to hook VHX gauges on an E38 ECM. The only difference was they have a 5v input so no resistor. Thanks Mike

Thanks. I used that info to get my tach working, but I still trying to get my speedometer to work.
