1997 vats delete possible on cavalier 4cyl?

I went to delete a vats system on a buddys 97 cavalier that he replaced the ignition system in...car starts then shuts off with theft light on..I have had success on other cars such as my 2002 grand am, but when I went to do this one the System>Vats> was already set to disable so I go look at theft codes and only find one of the 4 set to 1trip error...I made sure they were all set to no error3 but still no luck...Is there any tricks to the older vats system?
