Help me understand ECM to BCM communication

Can anyone help explain this? I am looking at how the BCM works in conjunction with the ECM to be able to drive things such as ABS, TCS, ECS, and gauges. If I install a different engine and ECM, does that negate all functionality of the BCM?

Depending on year the ECM and BCM communicate over the CAN bus. Vin in ECM must usually match vin in BCM and be from the same vehicle.

You should still be able to use all of your fancy stuff like A/C, steering, and brakes. It's just that as soon as power goes through them and the BCM it will send an invalid signal to the ECM to try and shut off the engine.
