Hp tuner use for engine swap
Im new to the forum so hopefully Im posting in the right section.
Im in the process of building a 8.1 liter vortec motor for my 2006 chevy 2500 hd. Currently my truck has a 6.0 liter motor with a 4l80e transmission. I bought this 8.1 liter motor so I can throw it n my pickup. My current PCM has been upgraded by a local engine tuner with HP tuners program. I worked closely with the tuner to build a program for my driving style. However I do not own the program. I have had the program in my truck now for over 4 years with excellent results.
So now with the idea of putting in this new motor I am wondering if I purchase a hp tuners setup for my computer, will the program give me enough capacity to alter the program to work with the bigger motor. I am keeping all the original wiring harness for the 6.0 liter and using that on the 8.1 liter. Also I am keeping my 4l80e transmission as I have built this tranny with the best parts possible to handle severe us and towing. Im thinking this will keep most of my swap issues to a minimum.
So can I just purchase a hp tuner setup and program the PCM for use with this 8.1 liter motor?
Thanks for your advise.

You should have no problem at all trying to do what you're expecting to with your existing PCM & tranny setup via HPT. There might be a difference between the two motors crank/reluctor signals, also with some PCM table adjustments for the new motors larger injectors, but that can easily be adressed when the time comes. Good luck and welcome abord.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.
The 4l80 E will bolt right up to the 8.1. There are no issues with doing that as that combo was used from the factory with the avalanche and the suburban. I checked with the guy who did the tuning and he did not lock the tune. I was afraid he did so that was my first phone call before I did anything. He assumed I would be buying and changing things later in life.
You mentioned opening a stock 8.1 tune. Is there a "library" of tunes that I can find a stock tune in a case like this? That would be very helpful for me. Im doing some performance upgrades on the motor but if I had a base from where to start it would make life so much easier.

HPT customers have access to a tune repository via our customer login page. You could also hook power & OBD2 harness to the 8.1 ECM you salvaged so that you can read, save and then view the tune inside there whenever you need to reference something. (It would only cost you credits to alter or burn that tune, not to look through it's tables.)

That's good information to know especially being able to read the salvaged pcm to view the file. This seems to be much easier than I originally thought.
I have alot of old school knowledge behind me. I grew up building big motors, mechanical injection and nitrous oxide in Street and race cars, but I get lost in some of this computer tuning so having the forum and users who know more than I do will help tremendously. Its all a learning game.
