Thread: V3 Scanner External MPVI channels freezing

  1. #41
I got 3.0 working today without freezing finally. Had to switch to my other, older laptop that has an AMD A4 processor and Windows 7. I had been using it with 2.24 for logging to get me by until today. Neither 3.0 or 3.1 worked as of today on my newer laptop with a Core i5 and Windows 10. I haven't tried the beta on the older laptop yet, been backed up bad with all the issues trying to log and tune.

So you've isolated it to your laptop, that's more progress.

Now we need to figure out why the heck it works on some machines and not others.

I will install Beta 3.1.xx on my other Dell M4800 which is near the same physically as the failing machine, only it has Win7 not Win10 and try this evening. I don't have an AMD to test.

Joe, just a heads up from what I can tell the operating system doesn't matter, we've had at least 1 customer with win 7, win 8 & win 10 having the issue. Thus far the ONLY commonality has been intel i series processors ie I3, I5, I7 and the one customer that switched to an amd laptop the issue went away...
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

Tried 3 versions of scanner software.

    Sony LapTop Model SVF15N190X
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz
    Memory: 12 GB
    512 GB SSD

    Scanner version
    2.24.1172:
Started scan with wideband - worked. Stopped and started the scan 9 times. Worked every time.

    3.00.26:
Started scan with wideband - worked. Stopped scan (pressing red button) started scan - worked. Stopped scan and started- Failed. Only data that was logging was the wideband. Stopped scan, started still only shows wideband. Stopped scan, disconnected (using vehicle button) reconnect shows information being loaded, no errors, press record and only wideband data. Disconnect using vehicle button, unplug USB, replug USB, connect, loads no errors, press record and all data is logged again. Stop record, start record and only wideband data.

Repeated the process with wideband not logging and had the same results minus the logging of the wideband data. After stop and start no data would be logged.

    Disconnected wideband from MPVI.

Repeated the process with wideband not logging and had the same results minus the logging of the wideband data. After stop and start no data would be logged.

    Scanner version 3.1.44

Exact same results as 3.0.26. After stopping and starting the scan only wideband data would log.

Replaced laptop with Dell running Win10. Same results.

On the laptops that are crashing, can you try closing all the charts/gauges/graphs, and only use the channels display. What does it do then?

Good heads up. I do have an older laptop with a core2 Duo but it is very limited on HDD space (I think 500MB free on a 50GB SSD). I can see what I can do.

Does not matter if all of the windows are closed. It will still quit logging data. I closed all windows other than the data window. Still stopped logging.

It could be a CPU throttling issue, it could be some of the windows API calls we make..

We're trying to see if we have any HPT employees with a laptop that also has this issue. At that point, that's what we need to solve it, a laptop that has the issue, that we can develop and test on.

I would be happy to bring mine, along with the vehicle, to the mother ship if it will help solve the problem.

I had already set my laptop for 100% CPU as part of my early config. In digging through the power management settings I saw an option called "USB Selective Suspend" that was initially enabled. I just changed it to disabled and will do some more experimenting.

power options for usb and for processor scaling had no effect on scanner unfortunately :/ tried with both public scanner release and the beta and it was worse with the beta

I am having identical results as jsllc with both a laptop with an i7 and my surface with an i5.

Wideband is the only thing that continues to log after a certain period of time. I'm going to go into the BIOS/uefi settings and see how much I can change (maybe some of the Intel power save features or virtualization technologies are part of this issue).

    Ran test win different laptop:

After stopping the scan a starting again only the wideband data would appear, after a little over 30 seconds the rest of the data appeared again. I will try with this system (older laptop Dell E6500) and run log for a duration if possible. I did run a 45 minute log today on ver2.24 on my Sony without issue bet ver 3.x is still a no go as described above.
