Is there a way to tell how many credits with actually installing?

I have a new in the box vcm scanner and the seller told me has 2 GM credits with it. Is there a way to see how many credits it has, if any, with out installing it?

Ive seen if I install the suite software, and hook the usb up to the scanner and pc I can check that way, but it would require me to enter the application key into the software. Is the application key a one time use thing, like If I enter the application key is it now locked to my pc or something? Or can I enter that application key and as long as I dont hook it up to a vehicle it's ok?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I dont know alot about this and Im trying to see if it has credits and if I will even use / keep it or not.
