this car isn't in the compatible list, but the HPT software read it just fine and it seems to show lots of information. would it be safe to make some changes and write them back to the ECM?

As long as it shows the exact correct VIN# and vehicle information at the top, you should be safe. As always first save away a seperate "read only" copy of the original OEM tune file.
