    6l80 Getting Hot

The vehicle has a ~3000rpm triple disk stall converter from Precision Industries.

The transmission is getting hot, but very slowly.

On a 40 degree day the transmission temperature slowly creeped up to 240 degrees F

The vehicle has a small aftermarket tube and fin cooler installed inline with the radiator

The next step is to install a larger cooler and remove the radiator from the system.

    Attachment 57719
    Attachment 57720
    Attachment 57721

Attached is the stock file, my changes, and a log.
I have done a lot of 6l80 calibrations without issue but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything here.

You can see TCC is not slipping when engaged, and the shifts are fairly quick ~300ms

    Thanks,

Get a bigger cooler. I run a Derale 13402 on my G8. Its a plate style and I rarely saw 180 last summer in stop and go traffic. Last summer I wasnt locking up the converter until 5th. This year, 4th...

Oh yeah, my converter is a 245mm ~3000 stall unit. I honestly think its closer to 3500 by the way it flashes...

We put a 2 coolers on it and the trans still gets too hot, although it takes longer to get there and doesn't get quite as hot as before. With the new coolers it reached 235 F on a 50 degree day. Compared to 240 F on a 40 degree day before.
The return lines from the coolers is near ambient, so they are doing their job.

When the converter locks it begins to cool down, so I'm pretty confident the stall is the source of the heat but I'm thinking something may be blocking one of the cooler lines.

The next thing we'll do is check the flow rate through the cooler lines.

Do you have the fluid flowing the right direction? From the radiator to the cooler? Whats the model of the cooler? I had the PCM4Less cooler on my G8 b4 and the trans didnt get THAT hot...

I'm pretty sure the tech put this one on
    http://derale.com/products/fluid-coo...t-ports-detail

    or somthing very similar.

Like I said the line returning to the transmission is cold but the trans is still getting hot, which leads me to believe that there may be a restriction somewhere in the lines.

One of my personal vehicles has a supercharged LS3 with a smaller cooler than this and I don't have any issues either.

yes as stated before, the cooler in the radiator is known issue. It gets clogged very easily. Bypass the radiator and the factory external cooler if it has one. Use aftermarket external cooler only, and done.

Removing the stock cooler seems to have fixed it, we'll double check on a hotter day.
    Thanks!

Hey, had same problem last summer. My car was hot as hell. I have enough experience with cars cause i worked as a mechanic many years ago. I tried to clean the cooler and the radiator but the problem remained then i changed the fluid but it didn't work so i had to replace the transmission cooler with a new one. I have a friend who's a spare parts dealer and asked him about an affordable transmission cooler for my car and he sent me this link:https://transmissioncoolerguide.com/...ission-cooler/. I ordered one and installed it by my own and until now my car runs perfectly.
