Don't make the mistake of using a credit on a demo file. You will be S.O.L.

I'm new to this HP tuners stuff but have been working with aftermarket management for some time. I picked up a HPT Pro and had played around with a demo file prior to trying to program. A common practice I'm sure. Once I was confident enough to try it out, I brought the laptop to the car, plugged it into the com port and opened up VCM editor. Little did I know the file that I was playing with previously was loaded. By default I assume. When the message popped up to license the vehicle I said ok thinking I was using the credits on the vehicle I was plugged into. 2 credits were used. The vehicle was the same make and model but a 1 year off. My bad for overlooking. When the message popped up it looked like my vehicle. When I read the cars vcm I could not edit the file. I'm thinking what the heck. Thats when I figured out I just flushes 2 credits down the toilet.

To my disappointment HPT will not recover the credits. I can see a issues with customer satisfaction on these types of issues. Being a business owner myself I take a bath on a lot of things to help and be fair to customers. Specially ones I need to come back and spend money. Wouldn't even meet halfway. Basically I was told in a nice way to bite down hard.

Newbies make mistakes. Thats always going to happen. Give a guy a break and at least meet halfway. That would be the least I would do for someone.

I made a similar mistake once and also wasted 2 credits. They are pretty firm about the policy but at the same time if they start giving credits back to some people and not others it could get messy/unfair, etc.

So.. I do understand why they stick with that policy.

The good news? You won't do that again

When it's someone totally new to the game and it can be verified it's a demo file AND was never used, have some consideration.

One thing we do agree on, it will not happen again.

realistically, a demo file should have a flag that does not allow it to be licensed.

Happen to me as well. I thought it was quite ridiculous to be honest but you live and learn I guess.

Locking the demo files so they cannot be licenced would be the way to go. Also, the program should not load previous file every time it is opened unless the user changes default setting to do so.

I honestly feel like I fell into a trap and instead of HPT stepping up to the plate they turn and walk away. Sorry but reputation is everything in today's world. I am the first one to boast to friends and customers about new products but that can go 2 different ways.

There IS a setting to make it not load previous tunes every time

I do agree about locking demo files out from being licensed. That should be done IMO.

i think the whole scenario of licensing on a per file basis is stupid outright. the software already makes checks against the pcm serial code anyway when flashing.

i.e you can't flash in a licensed tune to multiple pcm's unless you have a stream license & if hp are worried about cloned pcm's, well that's defeated anyway.

It seems the only logical purpose is to get money out people who offer remote assistance and prevent tune sharing, at-least until they spend enough on credits for multiple streams.

Rookie mistake, yes, hpt's fault no, there is a reason it asks you multiple times, to license, and are you sure! The problem arises if they refund your money, then you get a guy like myself who has spent tens of thousands on credits, and I make a rookie mistake and lean on them saying hey I spent all this money, I messed up, can you refund me.
    you see where this goes?
The software tries to protect you, unfortunately you clicked (yes, I am sure)!
and as it says, this cannot be undone
Also this is a main reason that you are given 8 credits on a new purchase, because you will more than likely make a mistake
