    2003 Hemi Cam Idle Tuning

Okay so I am completely new to tuning. I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 QC 5.7 2005 pcm with a 220/227 112LSA cam from Stu. I cannot get this thing to stop surging coming to a stop and slowly cruising. Any tips on what all to change? I can post up my current tune file if needed.

i needed to adjust my idle torque spark/idle torque throttle. that helped, but what fixed it was tuning my ve tables. good luck hope this helps

Go the Hemitruckclub .com and search , there are a few write ups on how to do it......it's not hard mostly just changing O2 wiring

Looks like 2004 is suported, is this done on 2003 only because of no HPT support?

Order of magnitude to tame surging...

Set PT base timing to 12-14 degrees from 400 to 1000 rpms or there abouts, get rid of the negative and 20 degree swings it allows stock. Remember PT table is MAX timing it can run. It then pulls it down for over idling based on the spark and throttle proportional tables (see below)

cut down idle torque and throttle tables 50%

    Dial in ve fueling

    Dial in TB airflow

Dial in idle rpms, small 25rpms differences between P/N and D can cause it to start surging again

Rinse repeat. You can usually spend most of your time in the 3rd and 2nd to last spots to really get rid of ALL surging.

One piece of advice, a lot of people report the OPPOSITE of expected results playing with TB airflows, i.e. telling the computer you have a bigger throttle body in the tune should result in it keeping it closed more, i.e. give hte engine less airflow and lower idle. Reason why the opposite happens is because spark and/or fueling are still WAY off and the engine is staying alive using bare minimums of one of them. If the engine idles 200 over target with 15 degrees of timing (too much) giving it less airflow will likely cause it to overshoot too low, and open the throttle body anways and itll idle worse. Spark is WAY less sensitive for changes than the TB. 5 degrees of timing change is usually less than a 100-200rpms change. a 5% change in TB airflow can cause 1500 rpm surging. At least thats my experience. Tease out the mins and maxes of timing and fuel before you mess with TB airflows.

The PCM uses TB to control idle when its like 1000rpms off, once its under 500 or so off, it tries to only use timing. If you see the TB staying steady while you have surge, then your TB is pretty close and you can stick with timing and fuel adjustments. Thats the queue i look for.

People started swapping to the 05 PCM back around 2009-2010 , because the 03 pcm is very limited. at that time even the 04 PCM didn't respond well to modifications.... you have to remember the only real tuning for the Early rams was Diablo, and SCT ,HPT was focused on GM at that time. My 1st "fast" ram back in 08 was an O3 that we used a Modified LS system which nutterracingengines Hemtronix is also based off of....the Ole dark days of G3 hemi.
