    Making a backup ECU?

My ECU is part of an engine conversion which sees offroad use, so it tends to get wet occasionally.
I'd like to make a backup ECU to keep in the car just incase something were to happen. I already have a spare stock ECU sitting on the shelf.
If my ECU contains an SCT tune file, Can I still read it with HP and flash it onto my spare ECU? Or is this asking for trouble?
Surely there's no harm in reading an SCT file is there? I just don't want my Flash tuner locked out.
    It's a Ford ECU btw.

HPTuners can read an SCT tune easily, unless the tuner has locked the file. If that were the case, you could flash the OS back to stock and license that ECU after reading the stock file.

So if it is not tuner locked is there any risk of my ecu/ sct unit becoming locked/ unusable if I simply do a read with HP?

No. That would be very rare.

What does an invalid checksum error message mean? Is the file corrupted or does it mean it's tuner locked?
