Unable to read VCM previously tuned by Street and Performance

So I've got a customers car right now that was previously tuned by Street and Performance out of Mena Arkansas. When I try to read the computer it gets halfway though reading the ecm and fails and gives the code x36 unlocked attempts failed, almost like the computer is tunerlocked. However, I can read and write the tcm as well as scan the vehicle and record datalogs no problem. My question is, does anyone know what software Street and Performance used? I'm just trying figure out whether it's actually tunerlocked or if it's a problem with the hardware.

They used LS1 edit I believe. They dont lock the ecm, I believe they are changing the checksum so HPT and EFI cant read it. I have had a couple customers raise enough hell with them and send them the ecm's back to them and they undid whatever is keeping HPT and EFI out and I was able to tune them. Its their way of "locking" a ecm without "locking" them but they know what they are doing is keeping out HPT and EFI.

Interesting. Do you know if they're still in business? The only thing I can find is an outdated facebook page. I don't guess there's anyway around it other than to send it back and have them undo what they did. The problem I'm having is that there are no spark or fuel tables above 4500 rpm and the engine just shuts down, and it runs like crap in general.

Have you tried overwriting it with a good stock tune? A write entire may be successful and wipe everything to start fresh.

I downloaded a stock tune out of a 2009 G8 6.0 which is what the computer was originally out of, and when I went to write it to the vcm, it only gave me the option to write to the transmission controller, not the ecu.

S&P used LS2Edit on CAN Bus ECMs. The early version of LS2Edit automatically locked every ECM that it flashed. If you contacted S&P they would swear they were not locking them. They weren't smart enough to know what they were using automatically locked them. I've sent several S&P locked ECMs to Geoff at Engine Power Systems in Batton Rouge. He can unlock them and preserve the tune that is in them for a fee. That is about your only option as even a Tech2 or MDI will not overwrite it. Or replace the ECM. And last I checked the owner of S&P passed away and they are out of business.

Geoff uses a software that keeps pinging the ecm repeatedly with different seed/key combos till it "unlocks" its very time consuming, you need a dedicated computer that can just run without input for days(sometimes weeks if its a weird combo). Not really worth the effort, unless you just have to have the tune thats in the ecm. The charge is usually minimal, but you are without the ecm for however long it takes to unlock
