is there a way to input a seed/key combination into hptuners, like you can with efilive, or tunercat. just curious before I pull the trigger on the software to do it

When you select the "Read/Write" utility, it gives you a selection to choose to enter a custom key. I don't think you can create a custom seed. I don't know about that since I haven't tried it, but I have used the custom key to open a "tunerlocked" ECU, once given the key.
