    S550 Cam phaser issue

I am trying to help a buddy out. He has an 1000hp TT S550 and is having issues with this cam phasers resetting to 0 degrees during WOT runs. He has already replaced the stock cam phasers and replaced them with brand new GT350 ones which have better power ratings, but still have the same issues. What can cause the phasers to reset to 0 degrees? Below is a pic showing a comparison of both intake and exhaust when working properly and how they are operation now (left graph is intake, right graph is exhaust). Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

This happens at big power level especially if you change the oil weight to something like 5W50.

Replacing the phasers with GT350 version is not the best idea - different oil weight and flow orifices in cylinder head hence they are tuned differently.
Compare your tune with GT350 tune - work around feed forward tables.

Post a HP log and tune.

He is running 5W50 now, he did on both stock and new GT350 phasers.

To give more detail here. Before the issue with the cams, car ran fine on the track and cams were normal, but then he ran into an issue where water started leaking from the head gasket and it was because his engine builder did not resurface the heads when installing them on his built motor. He sent it back to the engine builder again and they resurfaced the heads and replaced head gasket and the car was ok. He took it to the track to test and ran into the cam phaser issue on his first run. His tuner told him it could be a phasor issue so he replaced the phasers with the GT350 phaser as he has a friend at Ford whom said it is a better phaser to use. He went to the track yesterday and the problem still exists even at lower PSI (15). Now he is at a loss. What else could be the problem?

So this is your issue IMO:

    Or improper head gasket(GT350, S197, S550 mix).

Can't he just disconnect the phasers and run the motor with out them ??? Buddy at work had a issue with the cam phasers on his ford pickup and just disconnected them. Been running the truck with them disconnected for 2 or 3 years.

Update - Found out the issue was happening before the head gasket issue. Oil pressure is fine so that's not the issue. His data log shows HDFX code going from 5 at WOT to 4 when the cams reverted back to zero (Logging with an NGauge). What could cause the the cams phasers to disable during a WOT pull?

Post tune file. Had this happen and the issue was load with vct unless there is something else. Shooting in the dark without an actual log and tune file to go with it.

I cant, tune is locked by his tuner. All I know is when he had a whipple setup, all was good, but when he switched to TT, he started having these issues. If his issue is not hardware related, I assume it is in the tune, but his tuner is very well known so this might be unlikely too. The tunes for both his whipple and TT tunes were the same tuner. Since his TT conversion, he went built motor with stock heads. That's about the only change.

Well known tuners make mistakes or overlook something simple things as well. We are all human. Why not contact the tuner, inform of the issue and have them rectify it?

Exactly. Any good tuner would want to know if there is an issue and dig in to find out if something can be adjusted or a mistake was made. With hundreds of parameters, one can easily let something slip by...
