    Another Rookie Mistake

Short story is I bricked my 98 pcm. However I did locate another one.
When I hook up, try to change the VIN number it says I need an "editor license" is this something I need to get besides the new credits to talk to the pcm?

Yes you need the proper licenses in order to change the vin in an ecm, there is no way around that.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

So what's the next step to obtain this license? Can the average home user do this? Or am I forced to go to the local shop?
Is this a license and credits?
    Thanks

you would need to read out the ecm, and select the year/model license(likely 6 credits) that is the only option that allows vin changing. If $300 in credits seems a little pricey you might want to ask around locally to see if anyone can do the vin change for you on the cheap...

Thanks Bill for filling me in on the good info.
As for the ECM its from the same year and model that I currently have. direct replacement. Think that will most likely be the 6 credits?
thanks again. I'll eventually ask all the questions!!

yes, only year/model licenses qualify for vin changes.
