2001 A4 Formula- No shift into 3rd at WOT

Well guys I have done many searches and have tuned, literally, thousands of cars but I havent seen this yet. I have seen this 3rd no shift issue but have always been able to correct it or the trans. This customer has a 2001 Formula full bolt on car with built trans and 3400 Edge stall converter. When at WOT the car will not COMMAND 3rd gear shift. Second is great and happens when commanded but it is not that 3rd is not grabbing but not commanding. I have brought the RPM and MPH levels to ridiculously low levels and still no change. I have also messed with shift time and pressures but to no avail. The only way to get the trans to command and shift is to get out and back in the throttle quickly. This is really killing this guy because he is a bolt on only car going 12.20 with a no shift issue. I am going to leave a tune and log from the last pass and we will see if someone has seen the fix for this one. I know there are some smarter guys than me out there and I hope he is listening.

Try logging trans output shaft rpm so you can calculate the trans mph which is used by the pcm to calculate the wot shift points.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

(60*Trans output shaft rpm)/trans output revs/mile(which is found in your editor file) is the calculation.

OK Bill when I do this, what am I going to get from it? Please excuse me from sounding stupid but what will this tell me? Like I said, I have not run into this and there are smarter people out there, such as yourself.

For instance if your 2-3 wot shift mph is set for say 50mph and your transmission is getting a calculated mph of 48mph whereas the vehicle mph is 65mph the vehicle will not even attempt to shift until it reaches the transmissions calculated mph. I've seen it happen a few times and the easiest way to check things out are by double checking via a spreadsheet to make sure things are calculating correctly on both ends so you can at least rule that out as a factor.

Here is the excel file I've previously used specifically for this calculation http://www.thetuningdoctor.com/Excel...%20%283%29.xls

what is trans output revs in the calculation? Is it output shaft rpm again? And is mile the desired mph shift point set in hp tuners? I just want to 100% sure.

I understand its a pid. I just dont see trans output revs as a option in my list. I see output shaft rpm but not revs. Revs is usually measured in rpm so that's why i asked if was the same thing as output shaft rpm. Sorry for the dumb questions.

Dragging this thread up. Could'nt you simply lower the MPH tables to say 10mph thus forcing the RPM table to become the primary shifting value?

    Ok Bill,

If I am commanding a shift @ 6k and 73 MPH but the final trans mph in your calculator shows 83 mph, what do I need to adjust so the darn things when commanded? As it sits now even after many alterations to the shift tables in the tune, I am still shifting @ 79 MPH and 6.5k.

Hi. Im having this exact problem in a 2000 a4 Z28. It started when I switched from 3.23 rear gears to 3.42. The 1-2 shift is perfect. I cant get the 2-3 wot upshift to happen. Im trying to follow your instructions here but I cant find the numbers you are saying to use. Any ideas? Thanks

Old thread here but having a issue. I have the setpoint for wot to drop to 1st at 45 but when I'm doing 60+ it still wants to downshift to 1st. By using the calculation abov it's showing 33.5mph. Tire and rear gear is set right what else is there to change?

This is a 0411 pcm with cos for 3 bar in a 98 firebird. Trans is a 4l80e. Normal shifts are fine

Hello!!! could you please send me an excel spreadsheet. I'm just starting to learn how to program boxes. I live in Russia, we have a lot of American cars, and there are no specialists to set up boxes in Siberia. I would also be grateful for additional training materials and advice!!!
