Thread: P0340 and delayed start after AFM delete kit - help please

    P0340 and delayed start after AFM delete kit - help please - solved!

    I'm a Ford specialist, so GM stuff is not my norm. Here at our shop, we've done two Texas Speed AFM/VVT delete kits, and both have had the same issue.

    Both trucks set a P0340 cam signal code, as soon as truck is started. Both trucks also have a delayed start on crank - about 4-5 seconds of cranking before the motor will fire. Fuel pressure has been checked and I see no issue there. To be honest, I do not know for sure that the delayed start is related to the AFM delete kit, but this is the customer's complaint.

    Both TSP delete kits come with a new timing cover, new cam sensor, and new jumper harness from the engine harness to the cam sensor. Both harnesses had the wrong plug end on them and did not match the cam sensor they include with the kit, which is the same sensor the truck originally had. I had to swap the plugs from the original harness over. I have verified that the wires are in the correct order in the plug.

    Checking crank and cam rpm signals with my Snap On scanner, I get no cam reading with the truck running. The truck runs perfectly fine, aside from the mentioned delayed start. I have checked the three wires to the cam sensor, both at the sensor and at the ECM. I have 5 volts on the ref feed, ground, and 1.9 volts return signal back to the ECM. As far as I can see, the ECM should be getting a cam reading.

    Does anyone have any ideas on either the P0340 code, and/or the delayed start?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Sal

    What does the cam cover they included look like? I just chased through a similar problem and the cover they had sent was for a vvt engine, and the gear was a regular non vvt. the air gap is to much for the sensor to pick up. And caused the 340 code as well as delayed start.

    Well, it doesn't have the big hump in it like the cover that came off. But I was suspecting air gap as well. But there's no way to adjust that.

    What has me confused is that I am getting a return voltage signal back to the PCM, but the scanner shows 0 cam rpms.

    Swap the reference wire and the return signal wire?

    Have you run into this before?

    B=GROUND
    C=VOLTAGE

    cam sensor on front cover

    This is a 2010 5.3 Silverado.... is that Gen 3 or Gen 4?

    oh,, I would still verify the outer wires are correct at the cam sensor seeing that you had the connector apart

    Looking at the sensor on the motor, I have it wired Dark blue (5v) at the bottom, BRN (ground) in the middle, and Dark Blue/white (signal return) at the top of the sensor. The truck is a 2010.

    Are you sure you used a 4x cam gear.

    I used whatever TSP sent me in the kit.

    I have that same pic on my Mitchell. Those wires are going to their corresponding letters, however the actual sensor pinout I found has B in the middle.

    Doesn't matter the orientation on the drawing as long as the correct color wire goes to the correct letter terminal. Did the cam gear look like B?

    Yeah, looks like B.

    What's got me confused, is that I have a return signal back to the PCM. I've got 1.9 volts on the signal return wire.

    I have done several dod delete used kit from summit .I always just plug engine harness in to cam sensor

    Thank you everyone. The issue WAS that the two outside wires needed to be swapped. This 2010 Silverado has to be wired in the Gen 4 pinout, even though Mitchell shows it with the Gen 3 pinout.
