The next generation of GM ECUs are already having the first phase of autonomous driving capability added to their firmware so they are planning to be able to offer it across the entire lineup. That's what I've heard anyway.
Yes, for several years they have experimented with OTA programming. Mostly small updates. If the voltage of the battery is above a specific level, they can program via satellite w/o ignition turned on. It's limited by battery voltage. Some updates download and other pops up on screen asking if you want to update now or after shut down. Much like a cell phone update.
The man is always watching and now tracks every move even more. I get an email from On-star every month telling me about my driving habits, worst part is I had to approve that when I bought the new truck.
Now,with the level of connectivity the new stuff has there is no way the performance industry will survive while still modifying stock hardware. I believe that in order to keep the performance industry alive we need are going to need to develop anther level of hardware and software, that is not something I am smart enough to do. I have over 20 years in the industry and am smart enough to see the writing on the wall. The OE and big gov is going to kill all the fun. Look at what tesla does, no mods, you don't really own it you just bought the rights to drive it, cant re-sell private party without permission, and it goes on and on. I heard through rumor, so take or leave it, that the big 3 was trying to implement a lot of what tesla does.
Oh and don't forget everything you read and see on the internet is true

What makes you think that will actually happen?
I think there is so much momentum on the part of progressives in government and car companies that autonomous vehicles will "go public" even if it's only "incredibly difficult" to hack them rather than "impossible".
You are wrong. The "heyday" ended when car companies began rolling out the levels of encryption they believe might be enough for autonomous vehicles.

It's pretty straightforward. The automakers want as little legal culpability possible if someone DOES hack their systems successfully. They need to be able to go into court and as a defense say, "Hey, we followed what were considered state of the art and secure algorithms. We couldn't predict that someone would secretly invent a quantum computer and hacked our signing keys." As an example.
And with OnStar, cops can call the on star center during a pursuit and give them a VIN and they can kill the engine to end the pursuit... Whats to stop OnStar from having their system flag when a vehicle is speeding due to GPS info, and notify cops with a VIN and location so they can cite the driver?
