I wish calculus was all that was needed. Half the challenge is finding the right table(s) to make desired changes.

proportional -> opposes oscillation, think opposite
integral -> lessens oscillation, think signal reduction
derivative -> damps oscillation, think about what a shock does
There are many ways of tuning this without worrying about math, but if you are so inclined there are programs you can run in MATLAB to simulate PID responses. Do you have a specific problem you're trying to solve?

99% of the time you dont need to adjust those tables, assuming your adjusting for a camshaft.
