    Tuning the 5th gen LT1 engines

    So what is the general consensus on these engines? I am trying to learn as I go, I see lots of tune the VVT 1st, or tune the MAF, or tune this and that. With these engines being torque based I am somewhat lost as to where to start. Some of the basics I understand on the transmission side, but man the engine side if a whole new world.

    To be honest, if you have never tuned any previous generation GM ECU you're going to have a real hard time. Even those of us that had a grasp on all previous Gens, had a pretty steep learning curve on the Gen V's. I'd start with investing in some learning courses and reading a ton of threads on this forum. You're not going to find the answers in a single thread and you're going to find varying information on these forums. Pay attention to the dates. Some pro tuners on here gave advice in 2015-2016 about things that actually don't hold true. Of course if you read their later posts they state newer info so its not like they did anything intentional. Heck some of my earlier posts were misguided when I first got my hands on the GenV ECU's. But that is part of learning. I only bring this up so that you don't read a post from 2015 and hold it as gospel.

    If you really want to learn this stuff, the fastest way is to invest in tuning school programs. Depending on your level of knowledge would depend where you need to start. If you don't know what manifold pressure is or how a MAF works along with proper timing strategy that would suggest you need to start all the way in the beginner courses where they explain how the basics work. If you've tuned some old stuff like LS1 edit and understand the engine dynamics, then you're probably more in the intermediate class. If you've tuned some Gen 4 stuff, you could probably just start at the Advanced Level to fill in the blanks.

    ...and some of us haven?t had to change what we?ve been training people all along because we were doing it right from the start. 😉

    The short answer is that Tuning the (virtual) VE is an absolute requirement on these cars, since it has a huge impact on the torque controls. Some of the old shortcuts just don?t work so well anymore.
