    focus rs ecoboost software

hi, we are new to the forum & are looking to develop some tuning packages for the focus 2.3 ecoboost , we have emailed hp tuners direct regarding the there software for this platform we have seen there are alot of problems with these vehicles closing throttle when on WOT , increasing boost etc is a complex system

Is there anyone who has used the hp tuner software on this platform tuning stage 1 /2/3 packages with turbo upgrades etc

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thank you

Throttle closures are mainly due to people not altering the required load, boost or various other limits. The system is very complex and you need to gain a very good understanding of it to get good results.

i see that cobb tuning have got rid of throttle closure ? so you can dial in the boost as required etc

    Morning,
throttle closures are a way of life with Ecoboost and should be used to your advantage in many situations as a throttle closure at peak torque is a good solution to strong stable torque outputs when we just needed a little boost control.

Using the COBB OTS bases may help you nullify top end throttle closures but it wont really help you to understand what you are doing because the Ford Ecoboost platform is one of the most complex out there. If we take a typical load request path, it looks like this:

Drivers request in Nm > lowest limit for transmission in Nm > piston load required to create that Nm > Air Mass required to make that load > MAP required to deliver that Airmass.

If a throttle delta pressure is required it will then determine throttle position required to create the delta between MAP and TIP.

Once it has that data it looks to its wastegate strategy to determine the throttle and wastegate positions required. Old fashioned strategies used typical pressure models, ie valve duty cycle against inlet pressure, this one models turbine heat required from the engine to create the required turbine speed which will determine the WG position required as a mass fraction of gas to be delivered and how much to waste.

As part of the turbocharger protection strategy, the turbine has speed and temperature limits, the compressor has compressor ratio limits, airflow limits and three temperature limits for different uses as well as outlet pressure limits of course.

In an Ecoboost as you have seen there are hundreds of tables, switches and parameters that will be taken into account in this millisecond of processing, there are limits for every scenario and the lowest is always the one passed through to final request.

Ref throttle closures, often, at high rpm that lowest limit is the fuel delivery calculation that has determined the AFR you are asking for cannot be provided at the airflow you have asked for, it can’t i crease fuel, so it drops the airflow to one that CAN be fuelled for. It’s fixing your mistakes.

The ECU in this case is just doing its job. Thankfully, better than the tuner was in most cases as they were commanding an impossible condition.

Neutering the system is not the way forward.
Learning to tune it properly is always the better option.

We have the switches required to disable the throttle shutting, but that's not really the correct way to approach it.

yet another brilliant explanation by you Stu. I remember speaking to you on Guide of EFI Tuners on FB not long ago about ecoboost tuning, your knowledge on them is huge!!!

I am still yet to find a def pack for an EU Fiesta that I can look into lol
