    Whipple tune

I have a customer looking to install a Whipple and he wanted to use the Whipple canned tune as a base tune. Can you do this? Whipple is telling him they lock their tunes and he won't be able to open them with HP. Does that make sense? Or are they full of it?

you can read the tune, but he is correct in that they are garbage. I had nothing but problems and clear QC issues with theirs. I know why they don't want people looking at them.

And yes, they tell that to everyone.

If it is a strategy that has not been worked out you may need to submit a ticket, but again I wouldn't wast your time.

Their tunes are not locked, unless they changed recently. They have you pull your stock tune with the supplied BDX tool, you email it in, they send you back their modified tune to install to the vehicle using the same tool. Then you can pull it and modify it. They do a MAF only tune.

I wouldn't be doing the tuning it was for a customer. They thought it would be a good base tune to work off of. I know they aren't great but thats what they want to start from. I figured they were full of it over there.

never seen them lock their files, but agreeing with everyone here. the tunes are adequate at best. just enough to get the car running and not break, nothing more. if you want it to run right, and make power its going to have to be tuned properly

What I did was send Whipple a request for a tune on a "new to me 2017 Silverado". They sent me a file back that is "locked", but I loaded it in the truck and then read it back from the truck so I could see it and edit it. (Close the tune if you have one open and then read from vehicle.)

I read the existing tune '2017Silverado_20200824_5.3L_WHIPPLE_AsDelivered.h pt' 2017Silverado_20200824_5.3L_WHIPPLE_AsDelivered.hpt so I could go back to where I started as I tried to learn what I could do and compare with what Whipple sends me.

First tune '2017Silverado_20200825_5.3L_WHIPPLE_Editable.hpt' 2017Silverado_20200825_5.3L_WHIPPLE_Editable.hpt was defective (looks like something wrong with the MAP?) This tune caused it to throw a code turn on the check engine light and run terrible.
The Second tune they sent '2017Silverado_20200825_5.3L_WHIPPLE_Editable.hpt' 2017Silverado_20200826_5.3L_WHIPPLE_Editable.hpt seems to work 'ok'... not perfect though.

I edited the above file to compensate for 37 inch tires and am currently running the tune '2017Silverado_20200826_5.3L_WHIPPLE_37inchTires' 2017Silverado_20200826_5.3L_WHIPPLE_37inchTires.hpt.

As I am still learning what all of the settings mean, I am hesitant to make changes until I understand what they all mean... but I am still researching things.

Last night I was driving and there were three points where the oil pressure gauge went to zero. nothing else happened that I could see... but I was a bit alarmed. (also had some strange behavior where the radio would turn the music I was playing way up when I tried to answer an incoming phone call! No idea what that is all about... but there are some gremlins that I let in once I started poking around with loading tunes!)

At this point I think I am going to reload the tune that was on the truck when I received it and see it it goes back to the way it ran before I started monkeying around. (The problem with that one is that it is not set up for the 37 inch tires so the speedo is off and the shift-points seem odd.)

Putting this in this thread in case someone wants to compare setting for Whipple from Whipple.

If anyone would like to take a look and make some educated suggestions on what you think or if I am doing anything wrong I would be very very thankful for any assistance!!
    Thanks,
    -Batsy
